I have only recently discovered tea from The Mountain Tea Company but I am so very glad that I have.

I have enjoyed every tea I have tried from them so far.

The aroma of this tea in dry form is amazing. Such a strong delicious scent yet so difficult to explain. There is something quite roasty and toasty about this tea yet it is a green oolong. There is a smokey aroma but that does not convey in the steeped cup.

Steeped it is fresh, grassy, vegetal, and crisp. Refreshingly delightful and just simply splendrous cold brewed!

There is such a sweet honey like flavor with a bright clear finish. The sweetness does not linger in a cloying manner but rather leaves behind the flavor of fresh cut grass.

There is a lightly floral note of orchid and some fruity notes mixed throughout the flavors on the palate and a lovely lilting vanilla note that drifts over the taste buds but dissipates quickly making me want more.

While the cup is fresh and bright there is a deep creamy mouthfeel before hand – so the initial taste is that of deeply creamy and buttery followed with the clear cleansing finish.

I know I am just not doing this tea any justice in my review but I am just so very excited to be sipping on this tea right now. I want to sit back and enjoy it yet my excitement to share information about this tea with everyone can’t wait. I just want to get it all out and written down right as the flavors and notes come dancing forward for me so that you can experience in its truest form – outside of having it for yourself. I want you to be in the moment with me while I have this spectacular tea!

I do hope to get more of this before I drink it all, and it won’t be difficult to justify as it is one of the more exquisite teas I could invest in.

As a reviewer I can drink upwards of 10 cups of tea a day, some days more, some less, and I don’t review them all. I only review those teas I would suggest to others. Be it a solid beginner tea, a tea for those who are looking only for the best, or something in the middle. Even though I may not particularly like every tea personally, due to simply perhaps not enjoying a flavor element for example, I try to be quite fair in my reviews. Regardless, this is a tea I would recommend to everyone. Beginners should use this tea as a baseline for all other teas, specifically Oolongs if you are finding you love Oolongs. For those who have been drinking tea for some time you won’t be disappointed in this tea, or The Mountain Tea Company. I certainly am not as experienced as some but thus far I have to say this is one of the most enjoyable oolongs I have had the honor of sipping.

Sometimes we just get so excited about a tea – after drinking one after another – one simply stands out above the others. As for Oolongs, I would stand behind this one hands down as supreme.

Four Leaves Ripe Pu’er from Mandala Tea

We are proud to offer our very own blend of ripe pu’er tea!  We (and our customers) are very happy with the finished product.  While we love this tea now, we can hardly wait to see what 2 or 3 more years of aging will bring to the flavor of this tea!

The four leaves used in our ripe tea are from the Jinggu Tea Factory in Simao.  The Jinggu tea factory used to be part of the CNNP state-owned tea factories.  They started fermenting Pu’er in the mid-70’s and was the third factory ever to produce ripe pu’er!

The leaf used was spring picked and processed in 2009 and is quite ready for enjoying now.  We chose the material and pressed the blend in April of 2010.

Taster’s Review:

One thing I love about Mandala, other than their excellent quality of tea, is their 5.00 shipping! Its just something note worthy as I know when I am considering trying a new tea company their shipping rates do matter. Also Garret at Mandala is one of the most guanine people I have ever spoken with. He takes time with people. That is something we need more of these days.

Four Leaves Ripe Pu’er is a loose leaf pu’er which for those of you starting your pu’er journey may find a little less intimidating. However you can also get it in a cake as well, which is a condensed version of the tea. Steeping instructions are right on the packaging.

I always give my pu’er an initial rise, okay not always but most always anyway. With this tea I did do an initial rinse.

The initial aromas from this tea when steeped are fruity, and leather. There is a sweetness lurking behind these initial aroma notes.

This tea has a crisp bright mouthful, which surprised me as I was expecting something more rich and earthier from the aroma of leather. The flavor of leather is there but the sip is thinner than I anticipated, thin but not lacking flavor!

The sweet berry note is also noticeable.

One note that jumped out at me that took me completely by surprise was a buttered toast flavor! I swoon at anything buttery!

Now don’t get me wrong, this is absolutely an earthy tea, pu’er as a rule is earthy but the other notes bring forth a delightful cheery cup.

I really feel this would make for a good starer pu’er although maybe not a for your very first pu’er. This would be like a level 2 pu’er. Perhaps starting with something flavored first then working up to this.

On the flip side it is not as complex or mature as many pu’er so for the more advanced pu’er drinkers this may not be as exciting.

There is room for growth in this tea but it is young and as much time yet to develop. It does however have a wonderful starting point and if you are one to buy and store pu’er for later drinking I would absolutely recommend grabbing a cake of this!

Organic Shui Xian from Arbor Teas

Tea Description:

 Our organic Shui Xian Oolong hails from the Wuyi mountains in China’s Fujian province. This exquisite oolong is produced using the top three to four leaves on the branch. After wilting and bruising the leaves, they are hand-rolled into their final shape. When brewed, these dark green-brown leaves create an amber infusion with an exquisite floral fragrance that complements the tea’s sweetness (in fact, Shui Xian translates directly into “narcissus”). The taste is smooth and lightly sweet, with a subtle dryness reminding of pear skin, followed by a lightly baked aftertaste. As with most oolongs of this type it is moderately oxidized, ranging from 40% to 60%. Like other fine oolong teas, our Shui Xian Oolong may be infused a number of times, with each infusion revealing a new nuance of this tea’s complex flavor.

Taster’s Review:

This tea offers a very fruity flavor and is quite juicy. The roasted woody flavor is one of my favorite notes in oolong but it is so well complimented by the lighter plum flavors. I get far more plum in this cup than peach but regardless I do enjoy the juiciness of this tea. I actually almost choked on my first sip because the juiciness exploded like biting into a ripe plum! I was not expecting this out of such a darkly roasted oolong.

The aroma is lovely with nutty and earth notes working their way up to my senses. There is something in this aroma of must notes and forest floor.

The after taste lends toward the drier notes but it never quite gets so dry that it leaves your throat parched – the juiciness of the tea keeps that from happening.

I love roasty toasty oolong teas especially when they have that backed good flavor in them. The light and subtle sweetness does bring about a bakery essence to the taste.

Of course you have your rock mineral notes in here that are lovely and I do love mineral notes in tea. It comes over as quite refreshing along with the juicy plum flavors and reminds me of sitting along side a fresh running steam watching the water run over the rocks and pebbles within it.

A pleasing tea and from a company that also cares about the environment – can’t get better than that!

Gooey Butter Cake from 52 Teas

Thanks to Azzrian for the idea for this blend. I actually think my wife is a little upset she didn’t think of it first. She makes an awesome gooey butter cake.

My wife is fond of telling people that she has no idea how I manage to make such amazing teas since my cooking skills are more or less limited to ramen noodles and microwave popcorn. Likewise, I have no idea what sort of magic she employs in creating a gooey butter cake. Yes, I could look at one of several recipes for gooey butter cake, but I prefer to believe it is magic, because a gooey butter cake (for those of you who have never had one), is one of those beautiful things that shouldn’t be discussed in such muggle terms as a recipe. It’s way better to have someone make one for you and assume they possess magical gifts.

So, this evening, I am here with a big tumbler full of iced gooey butter cake tea, and it is definitely, buttery, sweet, cakey, and just all around gooey-butter-cakey. It kind of reminds me of the Pancake Breakfast, it has the same depth of character, but of course it’s not pancakes, it’s gooey butter cake. Honestly, if I hadn’t just spent so long looking at images of gooey butter cake and writing about gooey butter cake, this might very well satisfy my craving for gooey butter cake, but the truth is, I’m seriously hoping my wife reads this and decides to make me a gooey butter cake. [I love you baby.]

Taster’s Review:

So I am very proud to say that I inspired this tea and Frank was gracious enough to whip some up! I was so thrilled when I heard this was being offered I literally ordered it on the spot! After anticipating its arrival I have finally been able to sit and enjoy this tea over several cups, several ways, and It is really quite wonderful.

It does have lemon myrtle in it which lends a lemon zest like flavor to the tea. So its more of a lemon gooey butter cake than a regular gooey butter cake, but that is absolutely fine with me I enjoy the lemon zest flavor.

I LOVE gooey butter cake and snarf up as much of it as I can when we visit St. Louis where they have gooey butter cake places scattered around randomly. Of course you can get gooey butter cake in any flavor the mind can imagine and I try as many as I can so I am somewhat of a gooey butter cake aficionado, haha.

This tea is quite buttery, with a toasty flavor that almost leans to a creme brulee taste. I will say that this tea is much nicer if you add a little sweetener, my choice is german rock sugar. It makes the flavors of the tea pop. Before adding sweetener I took my first couple of sips and it was good but I was not getting that cakey or gooey flavor – added a little rock sugar – amazing! Of course you can use whatever sweetener you wish.

I don’t mind having to add a little sugar now and then to some teas – especially when they are dessert teas like this one. Now if I had to add sugar to a straight tea that would be wrong in my tea world, but this is meant to be decedent so its fine with me.

Also this tea is so lovely iced! I prefer my tea hot, my husband prefers it cold. Either way its wonderful. I did feel that when it was cold it did not require the same level of sugar that it did hot, which is interesting, I do not have cold tea often enough to know if this is standard or not and hubby only enjoys cold tea with me every now and then so he has no opinions. I tell ya though, I really kind of want to grab some more of this before it is gone. I am trying really hard to hold myself back but a blend this good, in a flavor this rare, well you just never know when you may see one like it again and even then if the flavors will even come close to Gooey Butter Cake!

I guess while I don’t mind the lemon zest flavor at all, its quite lovely, I would like to try a blend that was straight gooey butter cake, but that just comes down to my love for gooey butter cake all together, I mean if I had my way Frank would make an entire line of gooey butter cake teas in every flavor I could toss at him.

Aged Traditional Anxi Tieguanyin from Verdant

A rich warming Tieguanyin with chocolate barley notes and traditional creamy floral aftertastes. . . .

The early steepings of this tea are surprisingly more delicate than the aroma would imply. There are subtle notes of lime and the thick saffron qualities of a green Tieguanyin. The mouthfeel is buttery like flaky pastry with a slow nuanced build-up of warm caramel notes. A velvety texture starts to come through with orchid-like floral undertones, and sweetness that extends long into the aftertaste.

The early steepings use the deep caramel qualities that the aging and roasting process introduce to truly accentuate everything that is wonderful about green Tieguanyin. The later steepings move into new territory with warming sensations particularly suited to cooler weather. The chocolate notes of the aroma come through as flavor like thick creamy Italian hot chocolate that unfolds into a warm in the chest like that of a great red wine.

Notes of puffed rice and barley start to build up and act as a contrast to the lingering floral qualities. The alternation between deep warming sensations and tingling florals creates an intriguing mouth watering juiciness. This is a very satisfying brew that balances the traditional charcoal-roasted quality of Anxi Tieguanyin with the best elements of the new greener style of processing.

Taster’s Review:

This is a body and soul warming temptation of a tea. It delights the taste buds but also the mind in its calming and wonderful way. This is one of those teas who’s layers are complex yet not trying to evade your senses. Each and every element of this tea comes forward and presents itself to you and does not make you work to figure it out. The layers of the flavor within this tea are so delightful and one at a time they evolve, sometimes melding together, other times, standing alone, but each flavor in the profile provided by Verdant Tea is noticeable without any effort.

At first it is lightly smoky and roasty, a well done toast taste, the barley gives it a full mouthfeel and makes you feel you are drinking something good for you like a hardy warm breakfast cereal! But then it becomes caramelized in your mouth like a french dessert. Just then you will find that the light lime zest comes forward and does a gentle sweep of your palate to cleanse it for the next layer of flavor to come but before that hits your taste buds you get a quick tease by the flavor of saffron and just as you are thinking “oh please give me more saffron” the floral notes come dancing onto your taste buds leaving this lovely delicate yet intoxicating lingering flavor of orchid!

The result – a taste that is robust and toasty yet very fresh and springy as well. This is one of those tea profiles that could do well any month of the year as it makes you feel warm and cozy yet wakes you up with those fresh salad like notes of spring and summer.

The after taste is mostly of a roasted toasted oolong however when you breath in with your mouth open you get that fresh spring like flavor with the floral notes dancing about. Leaving you thinking your breath must certainly smell like flowers haha. While this is a roasted Tieguanyin I can’t help but think about country roads lined with wildflowers and the warm sunshine all about wide open fields so if this would be more of a “winter” tea it sure would make you feel like its summer time so that is not a bad thing at all!

This tea is exquisite! I love it and I am a huge fan of oolongs but honestly I feel that many people, even perhaps those who are not oolong fans really should try!

I really enjoy that the notes are so easily to distinguish! Sometimes “complex” teas can be complex to the taster. This one is not pretentious at all.

Now on the downside, currently Verdant Tea is sold out. It happened in the blink of an eye. On the positive note, Verdant is currently looking to refurnish their stash of this tea:

“We will be going to China to personally track down a larger cache of aged Tieguanyin in October. Stay tuned…”

I trust that this will happen! I have to, I want more! Verdant also now offers a Rewards Point System! A tea like this won’t last long once restocked so be sure to get yours before I get it all.
