Herbal Teas aren’t REALLY teas as many of us know…they are actually called Tisanes…regardless in this post I will be featuring my personal TOP TEN favorites over the past couple of months.  Of course my taste buds are totally different from the next tea lover but these are what fit my fancy as of late.  When it comes to herbal I tend of LOVE them or can live without them.  These are 10 I would highly recommend.  My Top Ten Herbal Teas or Herbal Tisanes, that is!  If you don’t see your favorite on the list let us know why you love your favorites in comments!

Aria blend from The Jasmine Pearl Tea Co.

Immediately evident in the dry leaves are whole cloves and some seed pods that I thought at first were anise but, after looking at the ingredients, I decided must be fennel. The attractive-looking combination also includes bits of licorice and marshmallow root as well as orange peel and peppermint plus cinnamon and ginger.

I used a heaping teaspoon of the tea leaves in a cup of water at approximately boiling temperature and then watched it steep for about the next four minutes. It smelled all nice and licorice-y while steeping and became a nice light yellow color, which reminded me a bit of a medium-strong green tea.
When I sipped it, I noticed right away the very present flavor of anise (licorice). It reminds me of the “throat coat” tea I grew up drinking whenever I had a cold, except that it’s a bit more delicate and refined in how it presents the licorice flavor. The licorice still manages to overpower the other flavors in the cup, though. I tried really hard and detected a hint of tingly spiciness from the cloves (I think. Or was I just making that up? I may have been just making that up), but I didn’t detect a noticeable presence from any of the other components. This was a little surprising as I’d seen citrus peel in the cup and that’s generally pretty strongly flavored. Fortunately, the licorice flavor itself was quite pleasing.
The effect of the tea is definitely soothing and relaxing to the throat. It’s a bit viscous as if it had lots of honey in it (likely because of the marshmallow root), which makes it even more soothing. It’s also caffeine free, which means it’s non-stimulating. This can be important when your throat is irritated and you’re trying to relax-soothe it, and it’s also good for singers in general especially near a performance because, according to some experts, caffeine can have a detrimental effect on the voice (the vocal cords, that is).

I’d say this tea would probably great for reducing throat irritation/scratchiness/etc, whether you have a cold or allergies or have just overused or abused your voice recently. (Which I haven’t. But I’ll be sure to use this tea next time my throat is feeling under the weather!) It probably can’t work miracles, like if you have laryngitis and are hoping to still go on stage or something, but it does have a markedly soothing effect. Also, this tea can be re-steeped! So you can use it over and over again, although I personally didn’t test to see how many cups of tea it will make so I can’t give a figure. I’d recommend this tea for not only singers but anyone who might sometimes overuse their voice or who might have to use their voice while sick, like teachers (can’t stop teaching just cause you have a cold!).

North from Metolius Artisan Tea

If you would have told me a few weeks ago that North from Metolius Artisan Tea would be an herbal tisane that I wake up in the middle of the night thinking about I would have called you CRAZY.

I mean…I’m pretty finicky when it comes to herbal tisanes. Let’s face it…they’re NOT really tea. I’m not saying that as a slam it’s the technicality of it, folks! North from Metolius Artisan Tea is a REALLY AMAZING Herbal Tisane. One that blew me away and I will not be able to say enough about.

North from Metolius Artisan Tea is Fresh, organic, vibrant, and hand-blended. It’s a sweet and spicy blend of coconut, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, licorice, and pink peppercorns.

I have a confession to make. I was terrified of the licorice in this. I know – I need to get over that. I have now sipped on many wonderful licorice flavored teas and tisanes since a few I tried years ago and couldn’t stand. But I have to say that North from Metolius Artisan Tea is in a class of its own!

The coconut and licorice pairing is something of an enlightening outer body experience of sorts. Call me dramatic if you will but I’m trying to express my surprise and delight with this blend of flavors! Its licorice and cinnamon ‘stave off sugar cravings and tone down energy-bonking’ according to Metolius so it’s perfect for evenings or after dinner when you don’t have anything for dessert or later on in the night when you have that sweet tooth going. The spices are present at the ideal ratio, too!

I wouldn’t change one thing about this herbal. It’s truly amazing! I LOVE it! I find myself revisiting it time and time again!

Wild Jujube from Teasenz

I have a special treat for you today – well I think it’s a special treat, anyways – it’s Wild Jujube from Teasenz! Wild Jujube from Teasenz is a fruit tea – an herbal fruit tisane – if you will. China’s most popular herbal tea is made from wild Jujube. Jujubes are sometimes referred to as Chinese Dates and are small, reddish-brown fruits that has the appearance of berries. My first encounter with dried Jujube’s was ordering them from The Raw Food World. So I was very excited to try Wild Jujube from Teasenz.

I have a herbal tea/tisane steeping confession to make. While infusing Wild Jujube from Teasenz I grabbed one of the re-hydrated jujube’s and gnawed on it. It was excellent!

Dry – Wild Jujube from Teasenz – smells like – well – dates! A natural brown sugary type treat with a baked-good feel, too! Once I infused for several minutes the wet liquor left in my cup smelled like fresh-out-of-the-dryer cotton and dates

The taste of Wild Jujube from Teasenz was a gentle cup but still tasty and warming. A more comforting fruity-feel and flavor with a slight nod to something comparable to a date muffin. The end sip is more of a muted berry taste on the tongue. I’m really enjoying Wild Jujube from Teasenz! If you are looking for a fruit based tisane with only one ingredient – try this!!!!

Pacific Coast Lavender from Winterwoods Tea Company Courtesy of Amoda Tea

Herbal tea can be a great before-bed comfort, especially as the weather gets cooler.  Composed of sweet and savory herbs and naturally caffeine-free, it’s hard to go wrong.  Usually, my one complaint with herbal tea is that the flavor is mild or too delicate, but wow!  Was I proven wrong on this blend!  The lavender is so fresh, fragrant, and plentiful– it all but knocked me over when I first got a whiff of the dry leaf.  This is a tea with simple but powerful ingredients, each one vibrant and visible in the blend.

The health benefits of these herbs are all the positive usual suspects: lavender and chamomile for relaxation, rose hips for health-boosting vitamin c, and cool, stomach-calming peppermint.  When brewed, the lavender definitely takes the spotlight, lighting up my whole room with its warm, floral scent, and filling my senses when I bring my mug up to my face.  Beneath all the lavender fragrance, the chamomile and peppermint play well together, producing a mellow, grassy, lemon-mint brew.  The rose hips are harder to pick out.  Traditionally, rose hips tend to be strong and sour, more like orange or hibiscus, but in this blend they appear only as a little fruity note at the back of each sip.

While I might not be in the mood for this tea every night, it definitely comforted me, reminding me of herbal teas I would drink when I was home sick or staying warm on a snowy day.  Not to mention the lavender was out of this world: I have yet to find another lavender tea that can even come close to competing with this one.
