Taster’s Review:

This is awesome!  A real treat for the taste buds as well as the eye and nose!

The dry leaf is beautiful.  Not only are there long spears of green tea leaves in this (Sencha, perhaps?) but there are also jasmine pearls.  In addition to the two different types of green tea, there is an abundance of petals and blossoms, as well as pieces of citrus peel.  This not only looks beautiful, but it smells amazing too.

But none of that would really matter if it didn’t also taste good… and this does.   The addition of the pearls help to give this blend a really beautiful jasmine essence.  The jasmine is light and sweet, with hints of floral sharpness.

The green tea is a fresh, clean taste.  It is slightly grassy, but mostly what I taste is that sweet, exhilarating freshness.  It marries well with the lively citrus notes and the exotic jasmine flavor.

And as much as I’m enjoying the flavors of jasmine and green tea, the real star of this cup is the tangerine flavor.  It is sweet with just the right amount of “tang” to it.  Those tangy notes add a very intriguing contrast to the cup that is also sweet and floral.

I have tasted this tea a few times now, and I have to say that while it is delicious hot (and it is!) … it is even better iced.  It becomes pure, light, crisp refreshment in a glass.

And now through the 28th of August,  Daily Gourmet is offering of 50% savings on the Ovation Teas Summer Set of Teas.  This collection includes this thirst-quenching tea – as well as four other spectacular teas!  Don’t miss out on this special offer!

Special Piña Colada Green Tea from 52Teas

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Green

Where to Buy:  52Teas

Product Description:

If you thought our award-winning Pina Colada Honeybush was good, wait till you get to try THIS!

We blended some of the finest green teas we had–some chun mee, young hyson supreme and a smaller portion of Japanese sencha for balance with real dried pineapple, our honking big coconut flakes and all natural flavors. This is going to blow you away. I was thinking really hard about not offering two green teas in a row, but this is so amazing I couldn’t resist.

Taster’s Review:

I must agree:  this tea IS amazing!

Having tasted their Piña Colada Honeybush and loving it, I knew I was in for a treat with this blend.  And even though I really do love the Piña Colada Honeybush, I think that this is even better.  The sweet, tropical flavors meld so seamlessly with the sweetness of the green tea blend.

The dry leaf is really beautiful with its green tea leaves, large chunks of dried pineapple and HUGE flakes of coconut.  And it smells as good as it looks!

But the taste is what really wins you over with this tea.  Sweet, juicy fruit flavor with a touch of rum.  The green tea is light and refreshing with a soft mouthfeel.  There is next to NO grassy taste with this green tea, I don’t know if that is because of the strong piña colada flavoring offsetting the grassy notes, but for those who often find the vegetative taste of green tea to be off-putting, I think that this green tea would work for you!

Unfortunately, as I write this the tea has sold out.  I do hope that this is one that 52Teas considers reblending because I think that there are a lot of people out there who are sad about missing this one – or at least, they should be!  It’s SO GOOD!

Since this one IS sold out, though, I intend on reserving the rest of this package away for iced tea brewing!  As awesome as it is hot, it’s even better iced!

Sencha from Urban Tea

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Green

Where to Buy:  Urban Tea

Product Information:

Japanese Sencha is a classic Japanese green tea enjoyed daily.  Grown in meticulously managed tea gardens, these flat, deep green leaves yield a light green-gold liquor with a slight sweet vegetal flavor.   These leaves will satisfy for multiple infusions.

Taster’s Review:

I was very saddened to learn that Urban Tea was closing their doors.  I have greatly enjoyed the teas that I’ve tried from them, and this Japanese Sencha is no exception.  This is a great Sencha!

The flavor is rich and sweet, with a nice vegetative taste that reminds me a bit of steamed spinach that’s been lightly buttered.  I’ve tried this twice, the first time, I used a little extra leaf, and I found that the leaves REALLY expand – a little goes a long way!

But, not wishing to waste the tea, I tasted it, and it was quite lovely when brewed strong.  It had a very brothy kind of taste.  Sweet with a taste that reminds me of steamed spinach that’s been lightly buttered.  It was quite satisfying!

The second time I steeped it, I used considerably less leaf and this – obviously – produced a much lighter infusion.  This cup was less broth-like, and had a lighter taste and texture.  I noticed that the stronger brew had a little bit of bitter taste toward the tail – not a “hey I scorched the green tea with water that was too hot” kind of bitter or a “I forgot to set the timer and oversteeped the tea” kind of bitter, but a pleasant bitterness that is a nice contrast to the sweetness of the tea.  With the second, lighter brew, the bitterness was less pronounced.

These leaves also produce multiple infusions – each quite delightful!  As I sit here enjoying this tea, I can’t help but be a little sad about the closure of such a fine company.  I recommend stopping by Urban Tea today and picking up some of this – if it’s still available!  You won’t regret it!
