Downton Abbey® Mrs. Patmore’s Pudding Tea by Republic of Tea

Before I get to my tasting notes I’d just like to mention that Republic of Tea uses eco-friendly packaging to combine the convenience of tea bags with the sustainability of loose leaf tea. The tea comes in a reusable (and surely recyclable) metal tin, prepackaged in super-convenient round tea bags that are:
  • Unbleached
  • Minimalistic (don’t use much material)
  • Biodegradable (well, it’s just a thin piece of paper, and tea leaves are compostable)
  • Chemical-free
  • Glue-free
  • Gluten-free
  • Without extra packaging like staples, strings, or tags

It’s a very clever design and I really appreciate the effort they put into making eco-friendly tea so accessible.

So anyway. I steeped this tea for four minutes. I enjoyed the steeping process as well as the tasting process, because this tea gives off a wonderful aroma as it brews. It’s actually so good that you might end up worrying that the tea won’t live up to its fragrance when you actually taste it. It smells like an excellent dessert, which of course it should since it’s dessert-flavored, and creates the impression that you’re baking something custardy in your kitchen.

After steeping, it’s become a nice medium-dark color; it’s reddish/orange/brown, and the smell has strong notes of vanilla and cream. The first sip definitely has more black tea flavor than you’d expect from the fragrance. There’s lots of pudding flavor too, especially in the aftertaste. A bit sweet on its own (without sugar), and it’s very, very buttery.

With milk, it tastes like a custardy dessert in liquid form– it doesn’t taste eggy, though (which is probably a good thing, because who would want to drink eggy tea? Although eggnog chai is definitely a thing I drink sometimes, but it tastes more of spices than of egg fortunately).

Four minutes is just the right steeping time. If you wanted it more dessert-like, you could add sugar to boost the sweetness. But I’m having it for breakfast, not dessert, so I’m not doing that because it seems plenty sweet enough the way it is. Milk goes very well with this (and adds a slightly sweet dimension while also boosting the creaminess). Especially whole milk. I don’t vouch for creamless milk though. Anyway, the creaminess plays into the pudding illusion, so that’s another positive.

All in all I really enjoyed trying this tea (I loooove having desserty teas for breakfast–it’s great because everyone thinks you’re just having tea rather than dessert!) and I definitely would like to try it again. And I’m very glad to know that if I choose to buy tea from Republic of Tea in future, I’ll be making an Earth-friendly choice!

U Matcha Single Sips from The Republic of Tea. . .

It’s that time of year, when you long for tea but the thought of a hot cuppa after being out in the heat and humidity makes you cringe.

Republic of Tea to the rescue! After gardening a while, I needed to hydrate. I reached for the convenient single serving pack and added it to a glass of cold water and used my aerolatte to stir the heck out of it.

These packs are intended for use with a 16.9 ounce water bottle (or 8 ounces hot water if you aren’t broiling like I am right now!) so you can have matcha on the go. Perfect for my son, the Crossfit trainer! Instructions say to pour off a wee bit of water – or just take a sip or two – and add the powder, replace the lid and shake shake SHAKE!

But how does it taste? Like matcha! While this is probably not ceremonial grade matcha, it isn’t bitter and this has monk fruit and organic agave inulin – which they advertise as being prebiotic – added. It is grassy and fresh, and just became available in June!

It was good and refreshing, went down super fast, and should give me the energy I need to do a bit more in the yard before retiring for the day. My son and daughter both carry water bottles of cold matcha in hot weather. This is a good way to keep it handy if you need to mix on the go.

Fenugreek Tea from Republic of Tea. . . .

I’ve never had fenugreek tea, and I don’t think I’ve ever had it as a seasoning in food either, so I had no expectations when it came to this tea.

But I am a huge fan of The Republic of Tea. I love all their teas, and I love reusing the tins that their teas come in. While my water was coming to a boil, I smelled the tea bag as you do, and I noticed a very pleasant cinnamon smell.

Things were definitely looking up for this tea adventure. I made my cup of tea, and when I took my first sip I was seriously blown away. It tastes like cookies, like a snickerdoodle or something similar. The tea has fenugreek seeds, cinnamon and organic carrot(?). Somehow those three ingredients make for a deliciously sweet cookie like tea. I mean, I am blown away by the deliciousness!

It’s not sweet in a cloying way, and the cinnamon is very gentle, much milder than a Chai tea for example. It’s just a very delicious and very pleasant tea. It needs no sweetener or milk, it’s amazing all on it’s own. According to The Republic of Tea’s website. this tea is for nursing moms.

Apparently fenugreek can help stimulate milk production. Since I am not a nursing mom, I decided to do a little research and see what other health benefits this tea had, and there are so many. It can help women with menstrual discomfort, can help reduce cholesterol, provide relief from sore throats, and so much more. What a delicious way to get some amazing health benefits.

This tea is just a delicious beverage even if you don’t care about any of that stuff. I am so so happy I got to try this tea. It is a new favorite. And it’s caffeine free, so it’s safe to drink anytime! It would be a great dessert tea.

Pineapple Ginger Green Team from Republic of Tea. . . .

I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I am a huge fan of The Republic of Tea. I love every flavor I’ve tried, and I love the tins that it comes in.

Although I have been cutting caffeine out of my life, this morning is a grey, rainy dreary morning and I needed a little kick. I usually like my fruity teas cold, but this was the only caffeinated tea I had, so I brewed myself a warm cup.

This tea is amazing! It tastes really good warm, I’m enjoying it which is a surprise to be honest!

The ginger kind of balances out the sweetness of the pineapple. It’s really well balanced, the pineapple isn’t too sweet, and the ginger isn’t too spicy. It’s a perfect cup of tea. It’s tropical without being too tropical if that makes sense. I don’t feel like I’m drinking a pina colada!

This is a tea that is delicious warm, and I’m sure would be very refreshing iced. I will be making a batch of iced pineapple ginger tea very, very soon. It’s reminding me of something I’ve had in the past and I just can’t put my finger on it. It’s smooth and flavorful, and since it’s green tea it has just a small amount of caffeine. I feel peppier and cheerful on this grey, rainy day which I needed. I’m imagining a sunny, tropical island and not a raindrop in sight!

If you haven’t tried Republic of Tea yet, I can’t recommend them enough. They make really stellar teas in a range of flavors. They have black teas and green teas and herbal teas. Anything you could imagine they have.

They’re on of my favorite tea companies!

Raspberry Leaf from Republic of Tea. . . .

Raspberry leaf comes in a round sachet. It smells just like banana, but this tea is made from raspberry leaf.  Brewed up with boiled fresh water, this tea just still has a banana like aroma.

One sip and this tea tastes  just like you are eating a fresh banana. I tried this tea on two different occasions. I still couldn’t taste any raspberry or any of the flavors that a few of the other Sisters got. . . . for me I could only taste banana.

I tried to enjoy this tea. I really did but unfortunately, raspberry leaf isn’t for me. I am not a fan of anything banana flavor. If you love banana, I would say this tea is for you!
