Plum & Pear Green Tea from Pekoe Sip House

Plum & Pear Green Tea from Pekoe Sip House there are so many things that interest me about this tea.  I am learning as I sip, actually!  First I have always wondered what plum and pear combos would taste like with different tea bases.  I think we have only ever reviewed one other Plum & Pear Tea at it was back in 2012 from New Mexico Tea Company and LiberTeas was the reviewer here at Sororitea Sisters.  But let’s talk about this Plum & Pear Green Tea from Pekoe Sip House this time around!

Plum & Pear Green Tea from Pekoe Sip House has similar ingredients with the exception of them NOT mentioning that their Plum & Pear Green Tea from Pekoe Sip House contains PAN FRIED green tea.  I will say that Plum & Pear Green Tea from Pekoe Sip House TASTES wonderful!  I agree that THIS tea is gently flavored.  The pear and plum flavors are in no way over the top!  They are more of an assist.  The Green Tea flavor is upfront and the plum, pear, and floral flavors are more subtle.

As the tea cools at room temperature I can taste the plum and pear come out to play more.  This leads me to believe that they will stand out even more if and when iced.  Yup!  I am really liking this one!  I’m also interested in any other companies that have a Pear and Plum combo out there that is heavily flavored.  Not that I don’t like this one or appreciate it because I DO I am just curious if anything!  Plum & Pear Green Tea from Pekoe Sip House is a VERY NICELY DONE flavored green!  Two thumbs up!

Taster’s Review:

I don’t think I’ve come across a black tea quite like this before. For starters, it’s appearance reminds me more of an oolong. The leaves are black/brown in colour, but they’ve been rolled into oolong-like pellets, complete with leaf stem! The scent also puts me in mind of a dark roasted oolong – it’s rich and kind of earthy, with a metallic tang. I guess these characteristics could describe a black tea too, but I personally associate them a lot more with darker oolongs, as I do the leaf preparation. Still – we shall see! I used 1 tsp of leaf for my cup, and gave it 3.5 minutes in boiling water. The liquor is a medium golden-brown, so I made no additions.

It might look like an oolong, but it certainly doesn’t taste like one! It’s actually a mildly malty, delicately sweet tasting tea, with strong stone-fruit notes. I’m picking up apricot mostly, followed by a mild plum flavour towards the end of the sip. It’s incredibly juicy-tasting, almost as if it were infused with fruit juice rather than just being tea. It’s not, of course, and that’s what’s so incredible about it. I’ve not come across many like it previously, with the exception of Butiki’s Mi Xian Black. If you liked that one, this is definitely one to try. As it cools, I’m also picking up some bready, almost yeasty, notes. The fruitiness fades a little at this point, so it’s not as unusual as it sounds.

I really enjoyed this cup. It’s sufficiently different from other black teas to provide some much-needed variety, and the fruit notes are a particular highlight. It’s a fairly light tea, both in terms of liquor colour and body, but it’s certainly not short on the flavour front. The leaf barely unfurled on my first steep, so I imagine this one will also yield significant resteep value. Recommended!

Taster’s Review:

Oh wow!  This tea has a delightful aroma!  I can smell the floral notes – the passionflower, the lavender and the rose … along with hints of chamomile – and these beautifully fragrant flowers mingle with the notes of vanilla cream and it’s intoxicating!   I imagine that this amazing scent would be the perfect accompaniment while reading a favorite book, a fantastical fragrance along with the fantasy of literature.

On the Plum Deluxe webpage for this tea, there are little snippets of customer responses about the tea.  One that stood out to me was this:

A black tea with an herbal taste. Very cleansing aftertaste.

I think that this really describes the flavor of this tea quite well.  I probably would only edit this comment to add the word “floral” behind the word “herbal” because I think that these two descriptive words better clarify what I’m tasting.  It’s a black tea and the black tea base is mellow – I suspect it’s a Ceylon – and the herbaceous tones and floral notes come through as the strongest, most forward flavors, but without completely overwhelming the flavor of the black tea.

Now, usually, I’m in full support of a tea tasting more like tea and less like it’s additives.  However, in the case of this blend, I think that I rather like the way the floral notes dance upon the palate.  I like that the black tea is more of a supportive background ‘voice’ that allows these flowery tastes to take on the lead of this tasty symphony of flavors.

It’s really quite dreamy – the flavor of this cuppa!

And what makes it so dreamy is not the floral notes or the black tea – but the cream notes.  The cream is not a dominant or aggressive flavor in this cup of tea, but it seems to be the stage that brings everything together so harmoniously.

When it comes to brewing this tea, I recommend using a slightly lower temperature.  I think that the floral notes are better expressed when the water is just below boiling (I used water heated to 200°F).  After giving the pouch a shake to redistribute the ingredients, I measured a heaping bamboo scoop into the basket of my Kati Tumbler and added the water and let it steep for 3 minutes.  Perfection!

Taster’s Review:

Yeah, I’ve said it about a hundred times (or more) … I’m not a fan of hibiscus.  But I am a fan of cinnamon and of plums, and I also like currants and licorice.  So this tisane seems to have more going for it than it does going against it as far as my palate is concerned.

So, I’ll give it a try!

The aroma of the dry leaf is an abundantly cinnamon-y fragrance.  (The same is true of the brewed tea.)  I can also smell notes of licorice and hints of fruit.  It doesn’t smell distinctly plum-like or even like currants, it just smells warm (from the cinnamon), sweet (from the licorice) and fruity.

To brew this tisane, I used my Kati brewing system and I measured out a bamboo scoop of the loose leaf into the basket.  Then I heated the water to 195°F and poured it into the tumbler.  I let the tisane steep for 6 minutes.  The liquid is a very deep ruby red color … like brewed hibiscus.  Fortunately, the color does not accompany the thick texture of brewed hibiscus.  Either the steep time prevented this or possibly the fact that there are a lot of other ingredients in this blend.  (Or a combination of both these factors.)

It also doesn’t taste too much like hibiscus.  I am getting a strong cinnamon-y flavor.  It’s a sweet, warm cinnamon flavor.  Not like the sweet, red-hot type cinnamon but like the kind of sweet, spicy cinnamon you’d sprinkle on your morning toast.

And I am tasting plum.  It is both sweet and tart.  The tartness is enhanced somewhat by the presence of the currants as well as the hibiscus, but fortunately for my tart-sensitive palate, this is not an overly tart drink.  I’m not puckering as I sip it.  I think that the tartness works in the favor of this tisane because it offers a nice contrast to the spicy and the sweet notes.

Overall, it’s a very enjoyable beverage.  I like it served hot – it has a very autumnal feel as I drink it.  It’s cozy and reminds me a lot of a mulled cider.  In fact, I think that would taste lovely with this, I might try steeping this tea in some warm apple cider!  It would also make a tasty iced drink that would be appealing to children as well as adults.

Taster’s Review:

The aroma wafting out of my teacup right now is quite lovely.  I smell the jasmine and the plum and these are two scents that I don’t think I’ve ever imagined together before today, but, they smell rather beautiful together!  It smells fresh and flowery, with mouth-watering fruit notes dancing in the background.

And it tastes – wow!  Just as I would not have imagined the two scents together, these are two flavors I wouldn’t have imagined together either.  But it works!

The first note I taste is that of the Shou Mei.  It’s light and airy, with a subtle earthiness and a hint of hay-like flavor.  The green tea notes seem to marry seamlessly with the white tea notes, becoming more of a unified flavor than two individual flavors.  Like green tea, only lighter and crisper … or perhaps, like white tea only with more of a grassy intonation.

Then I can taste the notes of jasmine.  Delicate and floral.   The floral notes are sharpened slightly with the presence of the sunflower petals.  The soft jasmine flavor stays with me throughout the sip and lingers into the aftertaste.

Just before mid-sip, I start to pick up on the plum note.  It starts out subtle and as I continue to drink the tea – about four or five sips into the cup – I notice the plum notes starting to become more defined.  Sweet with just a hint of tartness.  I am really enjoying the contrast between the sharpness of the sunflower and the sweeter elements of this cup, like the plum and the sweet notes of green and white tea.

I’ve tasted so many wonderful teas since I’ve joined Simple Loose Leaf’s Selection Club subscription service!  This one may just be my newest favorite (although I don’t think it will “replace” any others that have been favorites … this is just a new one to add to my list of favorites!)  It’s such a lovely tea.  It’s nice served hot, and I like it iced too.
