Taster’s Review:

As I’ve said many times before, I’m quite hesitant when it comes to herbal blends, but since I’ve recently tried their Nightly Beauty tea and enjoying it, I felt much more at ease while preparing this tea.

BijaBody seems to know what they’re doing.  They select the ingredients based not only on their positive benefits, but, also for their contributions to the flavor.

The two blends that I’ve tried thus far – Nightly Beauty and now Daily Beauty – have many similar ingredients.  Most notable are the  Pu-erh, cacao nibs and sarsaparilla.  Some of the other ingredients are the same as well, but, these are the most prominent flavor-wise.  But even though they have many similar ingreidents, this tastes quite a bit different from the Nightly Beauty.

I can taste the Oolong tea’s contribution to the cup.  It tastes lighter, smoother and a little on the creamy side.  I can also taste the cayenne pepper in this, it isn’t a spicy-hot flavor, but, it is certainly warming.  I can feel its heat on my palate, but, it doesn’t get to a level where I feel like I need something to cool it down.  It’s quite enjoyable, really.

I do taste the Pu-erh, but of the two tea types, the Oolong stands out.  The Pu-erh gives a light earthiness to the cup that mingles quite nicely with the other ingredients.  I also taste the sarsaparilla and the cacao nib … although neither are as prominent as they are with the Nightly Beauty blend.

While the Nightly Beauty blend tastes more herbaceous, I find that this blend tastes more like tea, albeit a tea blend that I don’t think I’ve ever tried before.  But there’s nothing wrong with that.  In fact, I like how different this tastes.

A very enjoyable tea, and if it has health and beauty benefits, that’s a bonus!

Taster’s Review:

This is definitely one of the most unusual variations of the classic Earl Grey I’ve yet to try, and it is no surprise to me that it comes from Red Leaf Tea, as they have the largest collection of Earl Grey teas I’ve seen from a tea purveyor.  This delights me because not only am I a big fan of Earl Grey tea, but, also, when I was just starting out in the tea business I wanted to have a vast Earl Grey collection.

Unfortunately, I did not succeed in that quest, mainly because it is quite difficult to blend Earl Grey!  It is one of the trickier flavors to perfect for many reasons:  not only is the quality of flavoring important, but also, the amount of flavoring is key … too much bergamot, and you’ll wind up with a tea that tastes like your grandfather’s aftershave, and too little and well, it’s not flavorful enough.  So when I come across a tea purveyor that has got it right, I’m impressed.

And this Honeybush Earl Grey from Red Leaf Tea is very well done, indeed.  The dry leaf aroma smells of honey, citrus and even a hint of flower.  The fragrance is really quite lovely.  The infusion smells like a mellower version of the dry leaf.

Wow!  This tastes amazing.  The honeybush offers its usual honey-like sweetness to the cup, and also brings a somewhat herbaceous flavor and a nutty note to the party.  The bergamot is less floral than the aroma suggests, and it is less sharp than a classic black tea Earl Grey might be.  It has a zesty citrus tone to it, and it tastes bright and tangy.

This is a refreshing change from the traditional Earl Grey, and it’s really nice to be able to enjoy Earl Grey later in the evening, when I usually have to limit my caffeine intake.  This tisane allows me to have my Earl Grey and drink it too!

Breakfast Black Tulsi from Shanti Tea

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Black Tea & Tulsi

Where to Buy:  Shanti Tea

Product Description:

Tulsi is one of India’s most sacred herbs, an aromatic shrub recognized for its spiritually uplifting and healing properties. This tulsi blend is a great morning tea, combining the strong and malty taste of Asamese black tea with the spicy-minty aroma and flavor of high-quality tulsi.

Tulsi or holy basil is an important symbol in the Hindu religious tradition and is worshiped in the morning and evening by Hindus at large. The holy basil is also a herbal remedy for a lot of common ailments. Holy Basil has been called the “Incomparable One”, the “Queen of Herbs” and “The Elixir of Life.”

Taster’s Review:

This has to be one of the most interesting and unusual breakfast blends I’ve ever tasted.  Interesting, yes … unusual, yes … but also very delicious.

I wasn’t sure exactly what to think of it before I brewed it.  I thought that the black tea might overwhelm the Tulsi.  But that thought vanished as soon as I walked into the kitchen after the tea finished brewing.  The smell of warm, savory spice filled the air.  I don’t think I’ve experienced that aroma from Tulsi in any other Tulsi that I’ve brewed, even the straight up Tulsi!  Maybe it’s the presence of the Assam that brings out those sassy tones from the Tulsi.

The black tea is – interestingly enough – not the strongest flavor I’m experiencing.  The Tulsi is strong and pleasant.  It offers hints of mint, basil and a warm, peppery note as well.  It’s providing a very arresting kind of spice experience:  a crisp, zesty taste of mint, a savory note of basil, and the warm undertone of spice that is quite inviting and comforting.

But all that is not to say that the Assam is overwhelmed here.  As if an Assam tea would let such a thing happen!  It certainly makes its presence known here, although it has managed to master a graceful subtlety to its approach.  It is rich and malty, sure, and provides a strong backdrop of flavor and a fullness to the body that is needed in a good breakfast blend.

Another thing that I’m noticing is a sort of slickness to the texture of the tea.  It sort of smoothly, silkily washes over the palate.  I like it especially because it seems to buffer any attempts at a strong astringent take over by the Assam.   Yes, there is some astringency, but it only alludes to a tangy dryness without seeing it through.

I like this breakfast blend very much – I consider it a MUST TRY for those of you who are looking for something a little different in your early morning tea.

LiberTEAS Tomato, Basil & Black Pepper from 52Teas

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Black

Where to Buy:  52Teas

Product Description:

When our good friend, LiberTEAs asked us to create this blend, I have to admit that I tabled the idea for a few days, thinking she would forget about it. We’ve created some unusual blends, but tomato, basil and black pepper? Really?

Well, she didn’t forget about it and though it took me a while, here we are.

We’ve blended our premium Indian black teas with just a tiny touch of lapsang souchoung, sun-dried tomatoes, black peppercorns, basil and natural flavors.

Taster’s Review:

How cool is this?  Frank (the Chief Zoomdweebie at 52Teas) created this blend for me.  And, as weird as the combination may sound to you, it actually tastes amazing.

When I originally requested this blend, I requested it as a green tea.  My thought was “tomato salad in a teacup” – but then, when Frank contacted me, he suggested making it a black tea and adding just a touch of Lapsang Souchong (which is NOT a favorite tea of mine) to the blend for a smoky note.  My first reaction was “eww, no” because that is my reaction when it comes to Lapsang Souchong.  But, after thinking about it for a few minutes, I thought that as long as the Lapsang Souchong was added at just the right amount, the smoky note would be very complimentary to the flavors of tomato, basil and black pepper.  So, I decided that the black tea would be a better choice… and now I have the most delicious “tomato soup in a teacup.”

The black tea base does not overwhelm here.  One taster of this tea stated that the Lapsang Souchong overpowers the flavors of black pepper and basil, but, I don’t think this is true.  I steeped my cup for just 2 1/2 minutes, added a pinch of sea salt (because you’ve gotta salt your tomatoes!) and the flavors are all represented well in the taste.  And I must admit that the Lapsang Souchong does add a pleasing smoky note to the cup.

But you’re probably still thinking to yourself … what on earth possessed this person to request a tomato flavored tea?  Am I right?  Well, tomato is my favorite fruit.  Yes, I know that it is used more like a vegetable than a fruit, but it is still – technically – a fruit.  And I love tomatoes.  Especially those just picked, sun-ripened, grown in the backyard tomatoes.  YUM!

The tomato here is the strongest flavor.  It doesn’t taste quite like the aforementioned fresh tomato, instead, it tastes like a cross between a fire-roasted tomato and a sun-dried tomato.  But that’s OK, because I happen to love them too.  And the flavor is so vibrant!  The basil is quite a bit softer, but it lends a fresh note to the cup, and the pepper adds a kick of spice.

Together these flavors make up a delicious tea that, when paired with some crackers, make for a light and yummy lunch!   THIS is the way tomato soup should taste!

As far as my opinions and findings while sampling this matcha of theirs…I found it to be a very nice, strong , rich, – and HEALTHY – matcha!  Not to mention great quality tasting matcha!  It leaves a leafy green meets veggie aftertaste but it’s darn good!  If you are a matcha fan – this is one you don’t want to pass up!
