Taster’s Review:

October’s shipment of teas for ITFA’s Global Tea Taster’s Club brought me teas produced in Taiwan.  And when I think of teas from Taiwan, I immediately think Oolong!  And, yes, this shipment featured three different Oolong teas (as well as one Black tea).  Yay!  I do love Oolong!

And of course, my favorite Oolong is Ali Shan!  And so what better way to start off these tastings from October’s shipment than with an Ali Shan Oolong?

This Ali Shan Jin Shuan SianSyue Oolong from the Dignitea Gardens is the first tea that I selected from my October package, and it is LOVELY.  It has a remarkably light roast to it, giving it a hint of nutty, buttery flavor without a strong roasty-toasty taste.

It is remarkably fragrant, with a beautiful floral note that reminds me of something between orchid and lily.  This floral note translates to the flavor, but while the floral taste is there, it is in keeping with the overall lightness to the cup, and does not overwhelm.

In one sip, I notice not only the delightful floral notes, and the nutty flavor, but hints of buttered popcorn, and a very subtle undertone of spice.   For such a light tea, there is a surprising amount of flavor and body to the cup.

This tea is a perfect example of why I adore Ali Shan so much.

Temi SFTGFOP1 First Flush from Rare Tea Republic

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Black

Where to Buy:  Rare Tea Republic

Product Description:

This excellent first flush tea delivers a rich liquor with sweet floral notes and creamy undertones.  Hints of juicy pineapple are apparent in this well balanced selection. Plucking date: April 19, 2011.

Taster’s Review:

OK, let me say it right now.  I’m LOVING Rare Tea Republic.  First of all, their packaging is really cool.  Not necessarily the box that it was shipped in, or even the pouches that they packaged their samples in.  It’s the “packing peanuts.”  That’s right.  I saying I love their packing peanuts.  They aren’t the typical Styrofoam peanuts, or even the new biodegradable cornstarch peanuts… these are little, light-weight (cardstock weight) cardboard bits that have been folded into a dimensional triangle.  I love them because they ARE biodegradable, and beyond that, they’re even recyclable and perfectly acceptable to toss into the recycle bin!  But, I plan on re-purposing them and turning them into a holiday decoration of some sort (add that onto my list of art projects!)

And… that’s just me excited about the packing peanuts!  I haven’t even gotten to the best part about Rare Tea Republic – their TEAS!  This First Flush Darjeeling from the Sikkim region is absolutely delightful.  The freshness of this tea is apparent from the flavor:  it tastes light, crisp and very fresh.

I would classify this as a medium-bodied tea because of it’s light-weight feel to the palate, but it offers an astonishing amount of flavor for a medium-bodied tea.  So many beautiful layers of flavor to this complex Darjeeling:  in one sip, I note floral tones, a hint of earth, a musky wood-tone, and an outstanding fruit note.  Yes I can taste the pineapple as mentioned in the above description, but there’s something else too.  Something that tends to be pretty important to those of us who love Darjeeling:   Muscatel!  Yes, I am getting that distinct muscat grape taste to this, but, there is a surprising smoothness to this too.  I don’t taste much astringency, something that I generally prepare myself for when I sip a Darjeeling … it is quite unnoticeable in this cup.

This is an excellent Darjeeling – one that I would say stands out amongst even the best Darjeeling teas that I’ve tasted.  In fact, I even rated it 100 on Steepster.  Yes, it’s that good.  I highly recommend it to those who like Darjeeling, and I would even recommend this to those who have tried Darjeeling in the past and felt it was not for them.  I think this one can change your ideas about Darjeeling.

Shade Grown Tie Guan Yin from Norbu Tea

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Oolong

Where to Buy:  Norbu Tea

Product Description:

Our Shade Grown Tie Guan Yin is a green style Anxi Tie Guan Yin that was harvested and processed* in the Spring of 2011, but the way it was grown makes the mouthfeel and particularly the aftertaste quite different from traditionally grown Tie Guan Yin.  Our Shade Grown Tie Guan Yin was grown very much like Japan’s Kabusecha (a partially shade-grown green tea).  It was grown in full sun like a regular Tie Guan Yin until 2-3 weeks before harvest.  At that point, a cover/net was rolled out directly on top of the tea plants to block about half of the sunlight.  The reduced exposure to sunlight increases amino acid & chlorophyll levels in the leaves, resulting in a finished product with a fuller mouthfeel and an exceptionally rich, penetrating and mouth-coating bittersweet aftertaste.

Taster’s Review:

Norbu Tea has an excellent collection of high quality teas, and I’ve always been very impressed with teas (and especially their Oolongs!) that I’ve received from them.  So, when I received this Shade Grown Tie Guan Yin in my Oolong October Steepster Select package, I was thrilled.  I had very high expectations, and again, I find that Norbu Tea has not only met those expectations, but exceeded them.

The brewed tea smells beautiful.  Very floral!  Hints of lilac that remind me of my gramma’s backyard in the springtime.   Orchid.  Honeysuckle.  It is a very lush floral fragrance.

The flavor is sublime.  It tastes sweet and floral, and the mouthfeel is thick and rich.  Creamy.  I want to say “buttery” but it really isn’t quite like butter, it is more like sweet cream.  The aftertaste is sweet, but with a slight savory tone to keep it from coming across as too sweet.  It is a very luxurious tea to sip.

Generally, you would find me recommending Norbu Tea’s Ali Shan Oolong (and my preference is for the spring or fall harvest Ali Shan) … and I still do!  But, I now need to include yet another onto my list of recommendations for Norbu Tea:  Shade Grown Tie Guan Yin!  If you are a fan of Tie Guan Yin, you MUST try this one.  It is likely to become your favorite!

Tasters Review:

I have tried a lot of orange flavored teas with spices in them and them seem to either ‘miss the mark’, have bored me, tasted very chemically-soapy-or FAKE, or just plain bad.  This one was very different!

Harvest Orange Spice smells very spicy and orange…so…I decided to under infuse for…only about 2 minutes. I didn’t want the spice to over power everything else.  Normally I steep for the longer suggested infusions because I want them stronger.  This one I was afraid to based on the extreme scent of the spices.  With the under infusion it seemed to work out quite well and I was VERY impressed with it. I suppose next time I could infuse longer now that I am not afraid of the spice in this. The orange is lovely, Juicy, and Citrus!  The spice was just right and the orange tasted quite natural.

I like this a lot.  I have found an Orange Spice Tea for me!  Thank you, Octavia!
