Lemon Poundcake Oolong from David’s Tea. . . . .

I don’t like lemon tea, honestly. I know that was not what you were expecting for the first line of a review on Lemon Poundcake Oolong tea, but it’s the truth. That said, the reason I decided to pick up some of this tea was: #1 I had some Frequent Steeper points I wanted to use and #2 The description of a “buttery Oolong” was tempting, and even though I may not generally like lemon tea I do like Lemon Poundcake. (or any poundcake, for that matter)

 

The first thing I noticed upon opening the bag was that there was a strong lemon scent, as if I just sliced open an actual lemon. Bleh. But I trucked on and continued to prepare my cup. The lemon scent became much more tolerable once it was steeped and I think that the oolong and other ingredients toned it down. Upon taking my first sip I realized that this isn’t even as strong as it smelled in regards to lemon, not in the least. It actually is quite tolerable and, dare I say, reminiscent of a true slice of lemon poundcake with vanilla icing! The Oolong definitely toned down the lemon with its buttery mouth feel and the poundcake flavor shines through at the end. The lemon is not strong or too tart, but it’s just right! Even if you are not a big fan of lemon, this tea could still be for you!

Watermelon Oolong from Gypsy Soul Tea Co. . . .

I’m not really a watermelon fan, you guys.

I know. Have I even earned the right to review this tea?! Stick with me, and I’ll clarify– I like the FLAVOR of watermelon. Fresh, juicy, summery– it’s delightful. But something about the texture of watermelon gets me– it’s kinda mealy, super watery (duh), and while I love its natural flavor, it’s often super light and diluted, and I just wish it wasn’t quite so… subdued.

This tea from Gypsy Soul takes all the things I dislike about watermelon, eradicates them in one fell swoop, highlights my fave (that tangy, fruity flavor!) and KNOCKS IT OUTTA THE PARK. For serious. I cold brewed this one overnight to be put on ice (because it’s just begging to be sipped cold), and I think I could’ve drank about a gallon rather than my measly 16 ounces– that’s how good it was. The flavor is spot-on, fresh and juicy, fruity melon– maybe a touch of candy-esque tang, but nothing near as artificial. Not a hint of mealy-ness in sight. I’m a happy camper.

No more feeling a little left out at summer BBQs– I’ll have this blend on ice with me instead!

French Toast Oolong Tea from Steeped Tea. . . .

I’ve totally been into French Toast Flavored Teas lately and there are some really wonderful ones out there for a bunch of different reasons. Today I would like to share French Toast Oolong from Steeped Tea!

Of course it has Oolong Tea as the base – you can tell that by looking at the name – but to look at the Oolong used – dry and prior to infusing – it is one of the darkest dry Oolong I have seen so far!

After you move along to the other ingredients you will notice this tea has pineapple bits (that are coated in a little sugar), Coconut Chips, Lemon Wedges, Cranberries (that are coated in a little sugar and Sunflower Oil), Orange Peels, Rose Buds, Pomegranate Blossoms, Prickly Pear Blossoms, Vanilla, and flavors.

The blossoms are lovely and add a VERY little floral aftertaste to this. But the flavors that really shine are the Coconut Chips and various fruit ingredients. The fruits that have just that spec of sugar coating add a nice touch. And that’s just what it is – a nice touch – it’s not overly sugared. I was actually surprised with all the fruity ingredients that it wasn’t overly fruity to the tongue. But it was surprisingly buttery-sweet, nutty, savory, and creamy! Not any of the individual ingredients are overdone. EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING has just enough flavor to all mesh well with the other ingredients, too! YUM! This was a special treat!

I’ve tried other French Toast Flavored Teas that were more French Toasty but this one was a winner on it’s own. Not so much for the toastiness – not so much for the cinnamon – not so much for the buttered-bread-likeness of others – but for the ratios used and flavor combo that turned out to be something completely of its own.

I wouldn’t mind if this had a sprinkle of cinnamon in it but it’s completely fine without it, too! Well done!

VariaTea Enjoys a Caramel Oolong. . . . .

Nine times out of ten I will pass on an oolong. I just don’t love it as a tea base. However, that one out of ten is usually awesome. Some of my personal favorites are A Quarter to Tea’s On Wisconsin, DAVIDsTEA’s Vanilla Orchid, Lupicia’s Melon Oolong, and this one.

When oolong teas are done right, they are just so very right and this is no exception.

The base is floral but velvety which blends nicely with the silky caramel flavor that dominates this tea. The saltiness works as a flavor booster, highlighting the creamy sweetness of the caramel.

Moreover, there’s a smooth butteryness that ties this tea together like the bow on a delightful little present. Yum!

Hey there! My name is Rachel. I’m a twenty-something from Toronto, Ontario, Canada who loves dogs and has a bit of an obsession with tea. As a child I hated the stuff since all I ever knew was Red Rose (no offense to Red Rose). However, a few years ago that all changed. I was on a diet and desperate for new flavors without adding calories and that’s when I turned to tea. I started off by going to DAVIDsTEA and Teavana for all their dessert-inspired flavors, and since I didn’t know any better, I bought 100 grams each of about twenty-something different teas. This was okay for the teas I liked but for those I didn’t I needed to find some way of getting rid of them. Enter Steepster.com. This is where I met some incredible tea friends, discovered tea swaps, and learned of so many amazing tea companies. My desire to try all the teas grew and since joining three years ago I have tried over a thousand different teas. I have learned what ingredients I love and I have learned what flavors I don’t like. I determined my go-to brewing method is Western-style with no added milk or sweeteners, though I also enjoy cold brewing, iced teas, teapops, lattes, and smoothies. I have yet to brew gong-fu style but I hope to do so just as soon as I get the proper teaware to do it. About a year ago, I actually stopped drinking tea but as my stash of over 200 teas started aging I decided I needed to respark my interest. I chose to take a 365 days of tea challenge on Instagram in which I post a new tea picture every day. So far it has been rather successful as I find myself drinking (and buying) more and more tea each day. Plus it enabled CuppaGeek to find me and invite me here to SororiTea Sisters.

Basil Lemonade Oolong from Pekoe Sip House. . . . .

Words cannot express my LOVE for this incredible wonder of a flavored Oolong. The tea I’m referring to is Basil Lemonade Oolong from Pekeo Sip House and it’s absolutely AMAZING!

It’s rare that I find a flavored Oolong that I adore so much I LONG for my next cup but Basil Lemonade Oolong is that Oolong!

It’s composed of half-fermented Chinese oolong tea, basil, lemon granules, natural lemon oil, marigold blossoms. Sure I find ALL of those ingredients but the secret weapon is the lemon granules! For some reason these lemon granules were like crack to me. They were SO ADDICTING and worked SO VERY WELL in this tea!

It’s light and refreshing. It’s almost creamy with a lemon-sugar twist to it, too! Pekeo Sip House’s Basil Lemonade Oolong tea is made with half-fermented tea that blends beautifully with basil, lemon granules, natural lemon oil, and marigold blossoms. Everything works in this loose leaf blend. Everything!

This is one of those teas that I would buy in bulk and cherish every cup! It’s tasty both HOT and COLD. I say with confidence Basil Lemonade Oolong from Pekeo Sip House is one of my FAVORITE Flavored Oolongs of ALL TIME! Definitely in the TOP FIVE maybe in the TOP THREE even! That’s how much I adore this tea!
