Taster’s Review:

Yum!  I love dates, but they are a fruit that I don’t partake of very often because … well, to be honest, I’m not sure why not.  I guess because when I find them in my usual “thrifty” grocery store, they don’t look very promising, and when I’m shopping at my higher end grocery store like Whole Foods or Chuck’s Produce, I don’t usually think about dates, because I usually go in there with a set list of items that I’m purchasing … and well, dates usually just are not on that list.

So, when I find a tea that is flavored with dates, like this Ball and Chain Oolong Blend Tea from Indie Tea, I get excited and want to try it!

And this is really a tasty blend!  The Se Chung Oolong is sweet and has a nice, roasty-toasty kind of flavor that melds really nicely with the flavor of  the Medjool dates.  There is a slight smokiness to the Se Chung … not an overpowering smoky tone, but just enough to keep things interesting.

There is also a stone fruit kind of flavor to the Oolong … and together with the smoky, toasty, nutty tone, it almost tastes like a roasted or grilled fruit.  Think fresh, juicy peaches that have been grilled to a slight char over smoky charcoal!  Yeah, now that sounds yummy, doesn’t it?

The date flavor is not an overpowering note – it doesn’t overwhelm the Se Chung Oolong … and that’s a good thing.  The date flavor is strong enough to taste that sweet, sugary note that is very “date-like.”  The flower petals do not add much to the flavor of this, in fact, there is very little floral tone to this at all.  If you slurp the sip enough to aerate the tea on the palate, you might notice the faintest whisper of a floral quality to the tea, but it is so very faint.  But, the date flavor and the smoky, toasted nut flavor of the Oolong is so tasty that you won’t miss the floral tones to this tea!  It’s quite nice just the way it is!

A really enjoyable Oolong blend … and another tea from Indie Tea that you should add to your shopping list!

Taster’s Review:

I was skeptical.  A chai blend with a pu-erh and yerba maté base?  Sounds way too earthy for my liking!  But, this Organic Energizing Chai Blend from Zen Tea is really quite smooth and tasty!

I don’t know if its really “fair” to call it a chai, because the only “chai” spices it has is pepper (and this is long pepper, not the usual black pepper) and cardamom.  But OK, since, chai technically means “tea” and not spiced tea, I’ll accept that this is a chai.

But, that criticism notwithstanding, this is still really tasty.  It’s not overtly spicy, and not nearly as spicy as I would like a “chai” to be, but, I like this for what it is.  And what it is is a smooth, sweet, warm blend that brings together the flavors of chocolate, coconut and vanilla in a really exciting way.

As I mentioned before, the base of this chai is a pu-erh tea and Argentinian Yerba Maté.  Both of these ingredients contribute to the earthy notes of the cup, and this is a very prominent taste to this drink.  But, I am not finding it off-putting, and I’m not sure if it’s because the coconut and vanilla give it a pleasant smooth, creaminess that seems to soften the earthy tones or because the earthiness complements the chocolate notes so well (or perhaps a bit of both of these reasons!)  The Pu-erh is more pronounced than the Yerba Maté, but I can taste both in this cup.

The chocolate is really nice here.  It has a deep, rich, almost toasty flavor to it, and this is nicely accented with the sweet, creamy notes from the vanilla and coconut.  Overall, this is a really tasty cup – certainly different from the typical chai!  But, I like this one for its differences.  This is not one I’d recommend to someone looking for a good, spicy chai, but, rather, someone who was looking for something that is a departure from that spicy chai.  This is not spicy … but it is tasty!

I like it!

Taster’s Review:

Organic Singampatti Oothu Black Tea from Arbor Teas – while the name is quite a twisted mouthful! – the tea itself is so smooth and rich and absolutely delightful to sip!

This is a very pleasantly smooth tea.  It starts out with a sweet note that is reminiscent of a caramel note – a light caramel note.  Throughout the sip, I notice hints of fruit and flower.  There are very subtle spice tones to the tea as well as a touch of malt.  It has a sort of “chewy” bake-y flavor that evokes thoughts of the chewy crust of a warm, freshly baked French Bread.

It is a warm, robust tea, but I like that it is not a bitter tea.  No, I didn’t over-steep the tea, but, sometimes, with Indian teas there are very subtle notes of something there that suggest to me that if I had over-steeped the tea that I would have a bitter tasting brew.  There is no inclination of that with this tea.  Just smooth, sweet, delicious flavor.

There is some astringency that is slightly dry.  I notice this dry sensation on my palate toward the finish, but it isn’t an overbearingly dry tea either.  The dryness reminds me of a fine wine, with notes of black currant toward the finish, and a slight dryness on the palate as the sip concludes.

Overall, this is a very enjoyable tea!  It is one that I’d like as that all-important first cup of the day (in fact, that is what it is today!) because it’s strong enough to provide a that little kick of gusto that I need to get going.  But it is not an aggressive tea, and it would also make an agreeable afternoon pick-me-up kind of tea as well.  Nice with milk and honey (or other sweetener) but, equally as nice without!

And I really can’t say enough good things about Arbor Teas as a company.  They are definitely tops in my book.  I love that all their teas are organic and fair trade – and that they are dedicated to providing the best quality organic and fair trade teas to their customers.  I also LOVE that they are devoted to the environment, using biodegradable packaging and focusing their efforts toward a greener planet.  These things are important to me, and I love that they are also important to Arbor Teas!

Taster’s Review:

Well, this is it, folks!  This is the last tea that I have to try from the Fashionista Tea collection!  And I saved (one of) the best for last!  Organic Creamy Earl Grey Black Tea!

If you’ve been reading my reviews for any length of time, you are probably pretty aware of my love affair with the smooth Mr. Grey.  I’ve never made it any secret of how much I adore the combination of rich black tea and the tangy bergamot fruit.  And I’m always excited to try variations of the classic combination of bergamot and black tea … like this Creamy Earl Grey from Fashionista Tea.

They combined the delicious flavor of the traditional favorite and added a touch of French Vanilla, which adds a smooth, creamy note … eliminating the need to add milk or cream to get that delicious latte flavor!  This has that flavor built right in!

But that’s not the reason I love it so much (because I rarely add milk or cream to my Earl Grey tea … make that VERY rarely … as in nearly never!)  I love this because the creaminess of the vanilla gives the Earl Grey a really different kind of flavor.  It is smooth and creamy, of course, and sweeter than the standard Earl Grey, but it is the play between those sweet, creamy notes and the bergamot that I really enjoy.  It gives it an almost “creamsicle” kind of taste … only more interesting because the orange notes here are bergamot orange!  It tastes like an exotic creamsicle.

The bergamot is markedly toned down here, it is not as sharp or tangy as it is in the classic version of Earl Grey.  But don’t mistake that as meaning that there is less flavor – because this cup is definitely a full-flavored tea.  It has a rich, solid flavor that offers a creamy overtone, tangy mid-notes and a strong, black tea base that supports it all.  It is not overly astringent (it’s quite mild as far as astringency goes!) and not at all bitter.  Just … really enjoyable!

After having tried all of the teas in the Fashionista Tea collection, I really must say that this company has some MUST TRY teas in their collection … and this one is among them.  I’d also recommend their Fashionista Blend and their White Tip Jasmine Tea.  Of course, you can’t go wrong with the Basic Black Blend, either.    And you’ll LOVE getting a package in the mail from them – the packaging is as much fun as the tea!

Taster’s Review:

YUM!  OK, first of all, I have to admit that I found the name a little confusing.  I form a lot of pre-tasting conclusions and/or opinions about a tea just by reading the name of the tea, which is probably something I shouldn’t do.  But I can’t help it.  And when I read “Black Raspberry,” I jumped to the conclusion that this would be a flavored black tea blend.  So imagine my surprise when I opened the pouch of this Black Raspberry Tea Blend from Trail Lodge Tea and immediately recognized the Pai Mu Tan and Green Tea leaves!  Not so surprising were the big, whole, dried black raspberries … but I expected to find black tea leaves, not white and green tea leaves!

The aroma is positively delicious.  It’s one of those fragrant teas that just got my taste buds excited by taking a whiff and taking in the amazing black raspberry notes.  My mouth was watering, and I could hardly wait for the three minutes infusion time to pass.  (I infused this tea using a low temperature water  – just 170°F and steeped the leaves for three minutes, and I’m very pleased with the results!)

This is YUMMY!  The green and white teas pair up to create a delicious base that is smooth and slightly creamy.  The creamy notes accentuated the raspberry tones very well.  The tea tastes a little vegetative, a little earthy, and very crisp and refreshing!  It has a light taste that sort of dances over the palate; it’s invigorating … but not in the same way that a black tea invigorates and energizes… this is more of a gentle, inspiring invigoration.  Like a sweet cleansing of the palate.

The raspberry is the star of this show, but, even though it is the “key note” here, it does not overwhelm the base of green and white teas.  Trail Lodge Tea has achieved a delightful balance with this tea.  This is one of the nicest raspberry teas I’ve tasted in a while.  The raspberry is sweet yet tart, and there is that tingly, tart note that rests on the palate in the aftertaste … but, it isn’t as powerful as *other* raspberry teas tend to be.  And as one who is not typically a big fan of tartness, I find this gentle tingly sensation to be quite refreshing and enjoyable.

My only complaint?  This tea disappeared way too quickly from my teacup!  It is one of those teas that I just can’t seem to stop sipping until it’s gone!  Delicious!
