Pig Sprinkles. . . Need we say more?? Miss Figgy from Tea and Tins

This tea gets top points for the cuteness factor.  Pink pig sprinkles? Check. Delightfully punny name?  Check.  Delicious, unexpected, cookie-tasting tea?  Check. This tea made me smile without even opening the bag, and I just had to break out my adorable sky blue teapot to brew up this blend.

Even in the dry leaf, you can smell the fig flavor, immediately reminding me of Fig Newton cookies.  Cookies and tea are an age-old couple, and cookie-inspired tea flavors are understandably popular.  Most of those tend to be shortbread, or cinnamon, or gingerbread, so a fig-cookie tea is a nice take on an under-used flavor.

This tea brews up as fragrant and sweet as it smells, the fig taste holds its own against the hearty black tea base.  Drinking this tea warm helps feed the baked-good charm of the flavors, like sweet cinnamon raisin bread or raisins in brown sugar oatmeal cookies.  Figs, dates, and raisins are all naturally sweet and starchy, so this tea has a dessert-feel even without sweetener or milk.  I’m not always a fan of overly-sugary teas, but the natural, fruit-sweetness of the fig in this blend really captivated me.  This blend was an unexpected favorite, and I will be bookmarking it for future orders.

Assuming the namesake of this tea– Miss Piggy– you should definitely brew this blend in your most stylish cup, and drink this tea with a load of confidence and sass, enjoying every drop of sweet indulgence.  Hmph!

Taster’s Review:

It has been a rough day so I wanted something soothing. Something warm, something soothing, something that made you just want to cozy up with a book and escape for a while. So I brewed up this tea. Everything about it screamed good for the soul.

If you aren’t familiar with The Jasmine Pearl, take a moment and check them out. I have liked just about every tea I’ve tried from them and these teas are memorable.

The dry leaf mix of this tea had such a lovely subtle smooth sweet yet slightly floral note to them.  I was hoping this flavor would translate into the flavor.

And wow! Did it ever! This tea is simply amazing! A light refreshing soul soothing tea with distinct white tea notes, a sweet vanilla pillow enveloping a citrus note that is reminiscent of a stone fruit. I would say either peach but I get apricot notes as well.  This tea is soft and loving. Really really really good! I bet this tea would make a dynamite iced tea or a cold brew. Something I hope to be able to try in the future.

Another highly recommended tea from The Jasmine Pearl. I have a feeling I will need 2 oz of this tea fast! I’m off to snuggle up with my book and enjoy the rest of the evening!

Unbeknownst to most, Queen Song longs for the day when she meets her island mate, King Kong. She has recently taken up hula dancing to keep fit and has begun wearing sexy, eye-catching outfits to attract attention. Despite the gang’s misgivings, she can be found wearing risque coconut bras when she is not at work.

Taster’s Review:

Another Luhse sample from my recent order. Nice Coconuts is a white blend, flavoured with coconut. The dry leaf smells amazing – strongly of coconut, with an undertone of creaminess, and a hint of something almost rum-like. Alcoholic, at the very least. The dry leaf looks to be a mixture of silver needles, which are white and downy, and white peony, which is blackish-brown in appearance and not particularly fresh looking. There’s a predominance of broken leaves and twigs. Scattered throughout are red safflower and blue cornflower petals, and a smattering of dried coconut shreds. There’s enough leaf in the pouch for about two cups, although if your cup is larger than average you might want to use the whole sample (about 3 tsp), as per the recommended parameters. My cup is on the smaller side, so I went with 1.5tsp of leaf, and gave it 2 minutes in water cooled to around 175 degrees. The resulting liquor is a medium yellow-green; the scent mildly coconutty with a floral undertone.

To taste, this one is deceptive! I wasn’t convinced at all by the scent of the brewed liquor, but it’s actually very pleasant. The initial sip is all coconut cream; sweet, tropical amazingness! It has remarkable depth of flavour, with just a hint of rum rolling around the mid-sip, and an almost thick mouthfeel. It’s like a decadent dessert – rum babas, maybe, with a side of coconut ice cream. It’s possible to taste a little of the white tea towards the end of the sip, although it’s by no means prominent. Just an edge of floral, hay-like sweetness. Mostly, the white tea seems to contribute most towards the mouthfeel, and doesn’t at all overpower the sometimes-delicate flavour of coconut. This really is a delicious, summery cup. I’m impressed with this blend, and it’s definitely one I’d consider repurchasing in the future.

Taster’s Review:

Over time, this has become one of my favourite Adagio teas, and it takes a lot for me to say that. This is a green tea blend, part of the Sunlit Blooms collection, containing lemongrass, citrus peel, and lemon and vanilla flavourings. The dry leaf is primarily green tea, and the leaves are medium to dark green, fairly long and folded. No specific variety is given, but I’d say Dragonwell as an educated guess.

There’s also a generous scattering of sunflower petals, which I assume are there to carry the lemon and vanilla flavourings. Lemongrass and citrus peel are less in evidence, although it’s possible to find the occasional piece if you stir the leaf up and look hard. This hardly sounds encouraging, but as this one actually turns out to be a great tea I’m going to refrain from further comment.

I used 1 tsp of leaf for my cup, and gave it 2.5 minutes in water cooled to around 180 degrees. The resulting liquor is a bright golden yellow, and smells mildly citrusy. To taste, it’s a different story entirely. Lemon cream, in the best bakery sense of the words! Although the green tea is a large proportion of the mixture, it’s completely unobtrusive in the finished cup, and super-smooth to boot. This means that the flavours really shine through, with lemon the first flavour to emerge, followed by a wash of vanilla and cream in the mid-sip. It’s truly wonderful, and sipping on this is putting me in mind of a huge lemon sponge coated in light, fluffy vanilla buttercream.

The lemon here is candy-like and a little tart, which works with the sweet, desserty vibe of the blend overall. Personally, I could probably take a tad more sharpness with all the creamy sweetness, but it’s so great I can’t say I’m all that concerned. This is lemon cream in tea form! A dessert replacement if ever there was one!

Adagio can be hit and miss in my experience, but this one is a definite hit. It’s just so perfectly put together, with really well balanced flavours. This is a must-try blend for anyone who appreciates a good dessert tea. I don’t think there are many that can match this one for pure lemon creaminess. Spectacular!

Vicky’s Sponge Cake from Bluebird Tea

Tea Description:

Think vanilla sponge cake with a dollop of raspberry jam!

There is nothing better than a cuppa and cake (except perhaps a cake flavored cuppa!) and did you know it was our good old queenie Victoria who invented the Vicky Sponge? Guess the name gives it away a bit! She loved taking afternoon tea with her home girls but decided they needed some extra nourishment to last until dinner. Cake it is then! We like your thinking QV!

Ingredients: Ceylon black tea, Coconut, Strawberry granules, Freeze dried raspberries, Raspberry leaves.

Taster’s Review:

I have been eyeing this tea for a while now.  So when a few people expressed interest in a shared order, I didn’t hesitate.  I used to belong to Bluebird Tea’s monthly plan, but with the shipping fees to the States being a bit high and my strong dislike of red rooibos, I thought it would be better to cancel. That was a couple years ago.  Fast forward to a couple days ago when this box of Bluebird Tea arrived at the house.  I squealed I was so excited.

I thought I would wait and share this one with my dad.  He loves tea and mostly drinks bagged tea just for the sheer convenience of it.  He also doesn’t take care of himself so I was hoping this might help him avoid the dessert table during our Mother’s Day festivities.  It didn’t detour him from the table, but I did!

When I opened the tea packet and peeked inside, I couldn’t believe the huge freeze dried raspberries that were in this tea! They looked delicious just on their own.  The mix is very attractive looking.  I scooped a few tablespoons into a tea bag and poured fresh water into the tea kettle.  Brought the water to a boil and threw in the tea.  Steeped for 4 minutes and poured into two mugs.

This smelled just like raspberry jam.  Tasted like it too.  Every once in a while you would pick up the cake like flavor. But I was ok with that.  I wished the cake flavor came out more, but this raspberry jam like taste was simply fantastic. I could barely pick up the black tea base.  The Ceylon tea base was so very smooth.

My dad really enjoyed it and said that out of all the tea we had drank that day, this one he could drink every day -all day.  So very good.  I was able to get another infusion out of it, but the infusion was quite a bit weaker.

After doing a bit of research on Steepster, it looks like cold brewing is the way to go with this tea to get the cake like flavors to really pop. Tonight before I go to bed I am going to have to try this.  It also looks like if you steep this longer, the cake flavors come out more.

Regardless, this tea is outstanding if you enjoy raspberry teas.  And if those cake flavors do pop with cold brewing or maybe shaking up the bag more- then that is just an added bonus!
