Taster’s Review:
Recently, Russian Tea Time sent me a tea party in a box! They shared with me their amazing Darjeeling Black Currant Tea that I’m going to review here, plus they sent me this gorgeous tea glass from which to drink the tea and they even sent me yummy, buttery shortbread cookies! Like I said, a tea party in a box!
What makes this particular tea so unique is that it’s Russian Tea Time’s own, unique blend of Darjeeling and Black teas with black currant essence and currant leaves. Most tea rooms out there are brewing up tea to serve to their customers. They usually get that tea from other vendors (nothing wrong with that!) but Russian Tea Time is not just brewing up tea to serve to their customers, they’re brewing up their own blend that they created and serving it up with scrumptious treats.
Since I’m not in Chicago, I can’t visit the Russian Tea Room in person, so I’ll just have to imagine what it might be like as I sit here, sipping on this Darjeeling Black Currant Tea from this gorgeous tea glass that they sent to me. (They also have some other gorgeous tea cups available in their online shop!)
So, I brewed up the tea in my Breville One Touch Tea Maker. When I opened the tin of Loose Leaf tea – they offer this tea in both Loose Leaf and Sachet form, and since I prefer loose leaf, that’s what I chose to try today – I could see that the tea was a CTC leaf. It’s not a super-fine chop though. Because the leaf has been cut, I opted for slightly less time for the steep, and set the timer for 2 minutes. I measured 2 bamboo scoops into the basket of my tea maker and poured 500ml of tea into the jug. I set the thermometer for 195°F (my go-to temperature for Darjeeling) and let it steep.
The tea is delicious. I like the base tea. I can definitely taste the Darjeeling tea – it has a distinctly crisp taste that’s undeniably “Darjeeling-esque”. The Russian Tea Room doesn’t go into details about the “black teas” that also comprise the base of this tea. I definitely taste the Darjeeling, but I am also tasting a more substantial tea in there too. This tea has that crispness and even a hint of muscatel that I’d expect from a Darjeeling, but there is a thicker texture to the tea too and that’s something that I’ve tasted in only a very few Darjeeling teas. It’s usually a characteristic that I experience from other black teas.
It’s not an overly astringent tea. This could also have something to do with the fact that I set the tea to steep for only 2 minutes. But whatever the reason, I am finding this to be really smooth and easy to drink.
The black currant flavor is a subtle taste – it doesn’t overpower the cup or the black tea. It adds a pleasant, mild fruit flavor that’s a little grape-like and it melds beautifully with the Darjeeling tea’s natural muscatel notes. It’s not overly tart, but I do experience a slight tart tingle on my tongue in the aftertaste.
This is a really delightful tea. It tastes great served hot and I suspect it would be a really excellent iced tea too. (For the record, the cookies were quite tasty too!)
What a lovely day for tea – thank you Russian Tea Time for the chance to enjoy tea time with you!

Taster’s Review:
I’ve tried quite a few Darjeeling teas from Golden Tips so far and I’ve been impressed with what I’ve tried. This Organic Jungpana Premium Autumn Flush follows in fashion. This is a wonderful Darjeeling!
I brewed this tea in my Breville tea maker, adding 2 bamboo scoops of tea to the basket and pouring 500ml of water to the pitcher. Then I set the temperature for 195°F and the timer for 2 1/2 minutes. It’s been my experience that Darjeeling teas do better with a slightly lower temperature.
And the result is a cupful of deliciousness! This is a delightfully complex Darjeeling. It’s crisp. The body of this tea falls somewhere between light and medium. There is some astringency to this, but not a lot. Just a slightly dry sensation toward the tail. No bitterness – just wonderful flavor that keeps me sipping.
The sip starts out with a sweet note that’s slightly grape-y. This tea has a distinct wine-like flavor (muscatel!) and there are some notes of flower. By mid-sip, the grape notes become more defined. I taste subtle woodsy tones and hints of earth. As the sip goes into the finish, there is a slightly dry, sweet note. The aftertaste is sweet with just a hint of tartness that reminds me of currant.
A fantastic Darjeeling. This is the kind of tea that I’d recommend to any tea drinker, especially to those who are new to Darjeeling. This tea would be a great way to start one’s journey into the wonderful world of Darjeeling tea!

Taster’s Review:
Hmm … different. This Tulsi Green Indian Chai Tea from Teabox isn’t exactly what I think of when I think “chai” but it’s still pretty tasty.
The base is composed of a Darjeeling green tea and tulsi. I definitely taste the tulsi in this – it’s warm and has distinct peppery notes with notes of basil and whispers of crisp mint. The tulsi gives this cup a distinct herbal flavor.
I find that the green tea flavor is a little less discernible. It’s definitely there and I can taste it, but it’s not a strong presence and has a difficult time asserting itself in the presence of the tulsi which seems to really dominate the cup.
The same is true of the spices. I can taste warm spices but they’re difficult to really pick out and say, yep, I taste this or that spice. I can taste notes of clove. Every once in a while I taste a note that reminds me of cardamom and every once in a while my palate detects nutmeg. Because of the strong tulsi notes dominating the rest of the flavors, it’s difficult to determine with certainty what spices are in this blend and Teabox doesn’t mention on their website or on their ingredient list, which mentions only “green tea” and “tulsi.”
This is a warm and comforting blend though. It’s not particularly spicy – again, the tulsi is probably the ‘spiciest’ of the flavors that I taste. But it’s a cozy sort of blend with which to unwind. I do wish that the green tea was a little more assertive and the spices more expressive in this cup, but, as it is, I enjoyed what I drank.

Taster’s Review:
Nice! This is Gopaldhara Gold Darjeeling Black Tea Autumn Flush from Golden Tips is a beauty! It’s not your typical Darjeeling – and that’s a very good thing!
This has a richness to it that I don’t often find in a Darjeeling tea. It’s very satisfying and well-rounded. It is almost robust! Almost. It has a very rich, pleasing flavor that I might find in a stronger tea. It’s not quite as ‘light’ or crisp as a typical Darjeeling, but it does have that familiar mustcatel that I look for in an autumn harvest Darjeeling. It’s like the best of both worlds in one teacup!
While it’s not quite as thick or strong as I would want for a morning cuppa, it does have a strong enough flavor that I’d enjoy it as a later morning or early afternoon cup. It’d make a really good pick-me-up when you’re looking for that boost mid-day.
It’s wonderfully smooth with very little astringency. I notice just a hint of dryness as the sip progresses into the aftertaste, but it’s very slight. There’s no bitterness to this cup. It’s sweet with notes of fruit and a wine-like quality without the astringency of the wine. And as suggested in the above description, I’m even picking up on a chocolate-y note. (I’m thinking that this tea would be a fabulous accompaniment to a chocolate bar. Then again, who needs an excuse for either good tea or chocolate?)
I’ve tasted quite a few teas from Golden Tips now, and I think that this one might be my favorite thus far. It’s just so spectacular.

Taster’s Review:
This chai is one that I was really excited to try! I can’t recall ever having tried an Oolong chai before! And even better – this is a Darjeeling Oolong Chai!
And it’s a really tasty Darjeeling Oolong Chai!
The spices are not as aggressive as you might find in a typical black tea chai blend. An enchantingly warm combination of cinnamon, cloves and cardamom, the spices are comforting and cozy without presenting too strong a spice flavor. It’s there – it’s strong enough to be tasted but not so strong that it overpowers the notes of the Darjeeling Oolong (which is one of my favorite types of Oolong tea).
The Darjeeling Oolong has a really lovely texture to it that’s soft and silky. I like the way the spices taste with this silky texture. It’s quite luxurious tasting. There are some hints of fruity notes to the Oolong tea: sweet and slightly grape-like. These add a compelling element to the cup, a flavor that I’m not quite used to with a chai blend. I also taste the slightly woodsy notes of the tea and the earthy elements and these complement the spices in a pleasant way.
With later infusions (this IS an Oolong and I want to get those extra infusions out of it!) I found that the spice notes tapered somewhat. The second infusion was still pleasantly spiced, but with the third and fourth infusion, the spices began to wane. The Oolong was still very pleasant and it’s certainly worthwhile to infuse this several times to enjoy the many layers of flavor that this tea has to offer!
A really enjoyable and unique chai! This is a tea that Oolong enthusiasts as well as chai lovers would enjoy! I highly recommend giving it a try!
