Taster’s Review:

This is another tea that I was sent by one of the organizers of the MidWest Tea Fest!  Queen’s Pantry Tea is one of the vendors that will be featured at the Tea Festival, and I’m so happy to be tasting their Windsor Castle Black Tea Blend today!

This is a very pleasant blend of three black teas:  Assam, Ceylon and Darjeeling.  I like that I can taste elements from all three teas.  I’m tasting a rich, malty character from the Assam, a brisk note from the Ceylon as well as a note of citrus which is a typical Ceylon trait, and a crisp lightness and notes of grape from the Darjeeling.

The combination of these three teas produces a tea that is well-rounded with a medium body.  It’s not too heavy or aggressive.  I’m not getting any bitterness from the tea – although I would still caution you not to oversteep it and because Darjeeling is in the mix, I went with a slightly lower temperature (200°F) to steep the tea.  While there is some astringency to this, it’s rather slight.

This would make a really nice mid-morning or mid-day tea.  It’s got a really lively, brisk flavor to it that will give you that perk-me-up that you might need as the day wears on, but it isn’t so stimulating that you’ll be bouncing off the walls!midwestteafest

And with the nicely round flavor that this tea offers, it would be a very nice choice to serve to guests.  It’d make a great iced tea too, try serving with a thin slice of lemon or a mint sprig!

Goomtee Autumnal Black Tea from Udyan Tea

Tea Description:

Goomtee is a very well known Darjeeling heritage garden planted with pure china bushes almost a century ago. This tea is for the strong hearted autumn flush lovers as it has a strong body with a very slight tinge of muscatel (grape flavour usually associated with second flush Darjeelings). It is a well balanced cup that leaves a stong after taste as well. With repeated steepings, the liquor becomes sweeter and midler. Perfect tea for long winding day with a good book in hand to read.

Taster’s Review:

A lovely second flush Darjeeling tea, this Goomtee Autumnal Black Tea from Udyan Tea!  It’s a stronger tea than what you might expect from a Darjeeling tea.  This is not as crisp and light as a typical Darjeeling, but it’s not as heavy as other black teas.  This still has a very recognizable Darjeeling character to it.  When I sip this, my palate still identifies it as a Darjeeling.

And the question I usually have for a Darjeeling (especially a second flush) is:  am I tasting muscatel?  And the answer here is YES!  The muscatel here isn’t as strong as one of those lighter, crisper second flush Darjeeling teas but there is still that lovely, muscat grape taste that I absolutely covet when it comes to Darjeeling.

The sip starts out brisk with woodsy notes.  Almost immediately after my palate notices those woodsy tones, I start to pick up on a sweetness that reminds me of the sweetness I’d experience from golden raisins.  By mid-sip, that raisin-y note transcends into something more like a muscat grape taste.  The finish is dry and slightly astringent, but not overly so.

When it comes to Darjeeling teas, the autumnal harvest is usually my favorite, so I’m really glad that I got to experience this Autumnal Black from the Goomtee estate.  It’s really delightful to sip.

Annapurna Amber Oolong Tea from Nepali Tea Traders

An exceptional Darjeeling-sytle oolong, Annapurna Oolong is infused with apricot and muscat grape flavors. Its liquor is full bodied, revealing a beautiful red-amber hue distinctive to our teas. Taster’s Review:

My heart goes out to the people of Nepal. The recent earthquakes in that timeless, beautiful country is astronomically devastating. I can’t imagine what I would do if it was safer to sleep on the sidewalk than in my own home. I have always been entranced with the Himalayas and every single tea that I have had from that region is flawless. This Annapurna Amber oolong is no exception.

I tend to steer clear of darker oolongs, at once point I even avoided them like the plague. This one is more along the lines of Darjeeling when it comes to taste. None of that burnt ash taste in my mouth. I had to double check may gaiwan, I thought I was drinking a high quality dian hong! I get the same mouthfeel on this tea as I do for that classic Chinese red. Notes of brown sugar coat the tongue and insanely delicious notes of sweet potato fries and cocoa follow around each sip. The aroma of apricots and roasted peaches waft up into my nose as I steep the tea. This true amber liquid is quite exquisite, I am surprised at how deep and clear it is. An excellent and unexpected darker oolong that I would recommend to any Darjeeling or even Chinese red lover!

On a side note, I saw this company’s tea at my local Whole Foods! I can now buy this tea as well as a selection of sachets in the same trip as my late-night ice cream runs! I like that grocery stores near me are really upping their tea game. I didn’t know that this was a local company until I found a small selection of their teas on the shelf. Sweet!

Rohini Supreme Breakfast First Flush Tea from Darjeeling Tea Lovers

Taster’s Review:

This Rohini Supreme Breakfast First Flush Tea isn’t yet available this year from Darjeeling Tea Lovers.  I was privileged enough to get some from last year’s harvest.  I had written this review some months ago, when this tea was still available on the Darjeeling Tea Lovers website, but my review was somehow misplaced.  Hopefully this tea will be available again this year and perhaps my review of last year’s harvest will convince you that you should try this year’s harvest!

When I opened the pouch of this “Breakfast Tea,” I noticed the green leaves.  This is not uncommon with a Darjeeling “black” as Darjeeling teas generally undergo less oxidation than other black tea leaves.

I brewed this tea in my Breville One-Touch, measuring 2 bamboo scoops of the tea into the basket and adding 500ml of freshly filtered water into the kettle.  Then I set the timer for 2 1/2 minutes and the temperature for 195°F.

The tea brewed up to a very light amber-coppery color.  It has a pleasant fragrance that is somewhat floral with hints of fruit.

The flavor is LOVELY.  While the tea is still quite hot, I picked up on very light floral notes with prominent woodsy notes and notes of fruit.  As the tea cooled, the floral notes began to develop.  Usually with a Darjeeling, I notice grape-like flavors.  This is particularly true of a second flush Darjeeling.  This is a first flush so I wasn’t expecting a strong grape-y presence, but, I was a little surprised when the fruit I was tasting was more like melon.  This flavor morphs into more of a grape-like flavor as I continue to sip, but those first few sips were quite honeydew-ish!

When it comes to the layers of flavor in teas, “woodsy” is not one of those flavors that I often celebrate.  It’s more or less one of those flavor profiles that I can take or leave.  It’s not something I usually get excited about.  I’m not usually like “Wow!  I love the woodsy flavors of this tea!”  Then again, I’m not usually like “Gah, I really don’t like that woodsy note.”  For me it’s something that I don’t really mind one way or another if it’s there or not.

But, I really am enjoying the woodsy tones of this.  It’s not a bitter wood or sour wood note.  It’s smooth and beautiful.  It melds beautifully with the fruit and the flower.  It’s a warm, slightly earthy note that is quite appealing.

Since I typically think of a breakfast tea as something that I might add milk and honey to, I don’t know that I’d consider this a breakfast tea.  It’s a brisk, bright flavored tea so I can understand why Darjeeling Tea Lovers might call this a breakfast blend – but I wouldn’t advise adding milk and/or sweetener to this.  It would really overwhelm the beautiful balance of flavors!

Instead, enjoy the gently nuanced flavors of the cup as they are.

Darjeeling Masala Chai from Teabox

An exclusive in house creation by our master blenders. For this blend, lemon grass and fennel are mixed with aromatic Darjeeling black tea to create a medley of flavors.  

The citrusy perfume emitted by the lemon grass is quite heady and gives a fresh twist to the chai. A must try for all chai lovers.

Taster’s Review:

This Darjeeling Masala Chai from Teabox is another ‘questionable’ use of the word “chai” – yes, I know that chai means tea (and I know that I’ve said that on more than one occasion too!) but we’ve come to embrace the word “chai” as a spiced tea – and those spices are generally a combination of the usual spices:  cinnamon, ginger, cloves and cardamom – sometimes one or more of these is omitted and other spices like pepper or nutmeg are added.

This “chai” has none of the usual spices and instead has fennel seed and lemon grass.  But what really piqued my interest about this particular chai is not the substitution of spices but the fact that this is a Darjeeling base!  I can’t recall having tried a chai with a Darjeeling base before.  That doesn’t mean that I haven’t, just that I can’t recall.

So, I was certainly interested in trying this chai.  And while it isn’t at all what most might think of when they think “chai” – this is really quite good.  I may call into question the liberal use of the word chai by Teabox, but this is still a really tasty tea!

This isn’t really a ‘spicy’ tea, but it does have some warm notes from the fennel.  The fennel is both sweet and gently ‘spiced’ with notes of licorice.  It adds a certain comforting warmth to the cup.  The lemon grass adds a hint of bright, citrus-y flavor to the cup and a light creaminess to the Darjeeling which has a crisp flavor.

It’s a lighter bodied tea, it would make a nice afternoon tea.  I like the fennel and lemon grass with the Darjeeling, they certainly add some interest to the woodsy, floral tones of the Darjeeling base.

Overall, a very interesting tea.  I don’t know that I’d call it a chai, but I suppose it’s alright if Teabox does.  I enjoyed it, regardless!
