Taster’s Review:

Are you looking for a truly DIFFERENT chai blend?  This African Chai Blend from Justea might be just what you’re looking for!  This chai is quite different from many of the other chai blends that I’ve tasted … and different is good!

That’s not to say that I’ve not enjoyed the other chai blends I’ve tasted … you know how I love a good spiced blend.  But this blend focuses on other spices:  I taste the fennel and licorice root up front, and they give the cup a sweet, snappy kind of taste, and like the Tea Sommelier video for this tea states, it’s a very silky sort of wash over the palate.  The clove and coriander lend warmth and zest to the cup without turning this into something overly spiced.  The balance of the spices allows for enjoyment of each ingredient’s presence here, and I like that.

The Kenyan black tea is an excellent base for this tea because it is so rich and smooth, and it has its own sort of natural spice taste to it.  It seems like a smart choice to accentuate the natural spice tones of the tea by turning the tea into the base of this African Chai.

I also taste the rose in this.  I like the hint of sweetness from the floral notes here.  It adds just a little interest, just a little something to keep the palate excited to keep tasting.

This tastes less “spicy” and more warm and “spiced.”  It doesn’t have a “spicy-hot” sort of flavor, instead, it tastes comfortably warm, with a cozy sort of taste to it.  The kind of tea that you like to warm up with on a chilly autumn day.  As I continue to sip, my mouth feels warm, as though I’ve had something peppery, but not so hot that I feel the need to wash it down with something cooling.  It’s a very enjoyable warmth.

I tried this African Chai a few different ways.  First, I tried it straight up, and it was delicious.  Then I tried it with a little bit of raw turbinado sugar, and discovered my favorite way to drink this chai.  The sugar brings out the subtle nuances of the spices, and I got the most enjoyment out of this chai with just a little bit (about half a teaspoon for a cup of tea) of sugar (honey would do nicely too!)  Finally, I decided to try it latte, and this makes a really outstanding latte too.  Just a splash of warmed milk enhances the silky smooth quality of this tea.  I really enjoyed it as a latte, but, the milk does mute some of the spices just a tad, and since I really love the spices … I’d have to say that the best way – or at least, my favorite way – to enjoy this is with just a little bit of sugar or honey.  It’s so good!

This Toasta Rica from Mad Pots of Tea is a PersonaliTEA that was created for my SororiTea Sister, Azzrian!  And it is really delicious.  I love that I’m tasting all the components here … with the exception of the Stevia … of which I taste very little!  Perfect!

As I sit here and sip and peruse the words of inspiration list (which I’ve included as the “Tea Description” above), I realize that this tea really does fit every single one of these words to a TEA!  This tea evokes thoughts of the rainforest with its earthy notes and warm, woodsy tones.  The spices speak of autumn to me.  It is indeed a meditative, toasty, aromatic, fruity, spicy, exotic, intense, Earthy, full-bodied blend of flavors!

I love that I’m tasting the ginger, the allspice, the coriander and the cardamom.  I taste a warm, peppery taste to this cup.  There are notes of fruit that taste as though they have been baked in spices … like a baked apple that has been liberally spiced.  It is toasty and warm … and definitely exotic.

But the best part of this tea for me is the Sarsaparilla.  I love it!  It adds just a hint of root beer-ish flavor to the cup … and the spices and sweetness of this cup seem to enhance the root-beer-y taste … like one of those gourmet root beers you might pick up in one of the expensive grocery stores.

Oh Christmas Tea from Tealish

Taster’s Review:

As I sit here, writing this review, it is July.  The sun is shining brightly outside, and the thermometer reads 71°F outside, and I wonder what it will be like when this review actually publishes, as I schedule it for December 13 … a little closer to Christmas.

A Steepster friend sent me a bit of this tea so that I might enjoy a little Christmas in July, and yes, it is very Christmas-y indeed.  It is warm with cheery spices and a hint of orange, and while a spiced orange tea is nothing new or out of the ordinary, what I’m liking here is how well-balanced it is.  It has a nice, rounded flavor that enlivens the palate with spices that are gently warm – not hot or what I’d call spicy – a touch of delicious, juicy orange and a robust black tea base.

The black tea here is rich yet somewhat understated.  It doesn’t attempt to overpower the blend, but it is substantial enough to hold its own and be tasted.  It doesn’t taste like it’s just there, barely standing up to the spices somewhere off in the background.  It tastes solid and strong without being bitter.  It has a mild astringency that complements the orange notes quite well.

The only ingredient that I don’t really taste much of is the apple.  I suppose it probably adds a hint of sweetness but a strong sense of apple doesn’t really come through – but then again, I don’t think it is supposed to.  It may be there primarily for appearance sake, or as I mentioned, for a hint of sweetness to accent the spices.

A really enjoyable holiday tea – very nice during the holidays, or any time of year that you wish to bring a little bit of the holiday joy to your teacup.

Mad Pots of Tea has a few select blends for sale on their site, but what is more important is that they make your custom blend for you based on a short but interesting survey that you take prior to their master blender Madam Potts taking over and mixing up your specialized tea!

It is all based on your likes, personality, and a answers to the survey. Its as if she profiles you!

My blend is called Toasta Rica because I love Costa Rica, and I like toasty teas. My tea came in a nice resealable brown paper bag which I believe is from recycled paper (love it) and a lovely card personalized by Madam Potts which reads:

Also there is a note that my blend has never been created and will never be created for anyone else! It is a unique tea – just like me.

Of course I have big cheesy smiles all around now!

The ingredients of my blend include: Imperial Oolong, Mango Ceylon, Yerba Mate, Rooibos, Ginger Root, Sarsaparilla, Damiana, Allspice, Coriander, Cardamon, and Stevia.

I do love a good chai and this tea has a true chai flavor to it but one thing I notice when sipping this tea is a wonderful black pepper note that just dances on the tip of my tongue – I LOVE black pepper! It is a sweet tea that has just the right amount of fruit notes to it without being too fruity and cutting through the intense tones of what I call my renaissance tea!

While you can’t get my exact blend, of course without asking me for it, I just want to say how in love I am with my tea blend from Mad Pots of Tea and I want to encourage any tea lover to give her method of finding the perfect blend for you a try!

Turn around on your blend is not fast. I waited five weeks from the time of order to receiving it but I am fine with that as it seems there was time allowed for the flavors to meld and the true beauty of this tea to develop.

I am thrilled with my blend even though my head was not thinking chai-esque the fact is chai is one of my first tea loves! Not only is this a chai tea but an extremely excellent chai at that! I have several chai teas from many companies here but this one is supreme!

Somehow Madame Pots hit the nail on the head with this blend not forgetting I needed something a tad bit fruity to break the monotony of the chai spices! I love that oolong was used as a base, I am an oolong lover through and though but I also love that some mate was added as I always need to get my energy flowing! I do not feel that any of these flavor components, although there are many strong elements in this tea, take over. Each flavor is getting its time in the Toasta Rica sun! Oh yeah!

Laoshan Apothecary Green Tea from Verdant Tea

The goal of the blend is to bring out the complexity of texture that Laoshan green exhibits while allowing the flavors of spring and of Laoshan itself to come through.  We used cardamom and coriander as complex texture building blocks that draw out the aftertaste and make the mouth water.  These additions are fortified with Holy Basil and peppermint to keep the crisp flavor and sweetness.

Taster’s Review:

I was really excited to try this tea – I had been hearing so many good things about it on Steepster!  Plus, I really love cardamom and coriander, and I love that this blend focuses on these two spices as well as their Laoshan Green Tea from this past spring’s harvest.  This tea seemed to have all the makings for a real winner of a blend.

The aroma is amazing.  With my first deep inhale, I picked up the unmistakeable notes of coriander.  My brain also was telling me “cardamom” although I thought I was just trying to think of coriander and cardamom popped out … then I smelled again and YES… that’s cardamom alright!  Then I started to notice subtle hints of peppery mint … is that tulsi?  Yes, indeed.  And once the olfactory nerves moved past the tulsi I was also able to discern the peppermint.  All these wonderful fragrances together with a very subtle leafy green note, smelling very much like the air in spring-time when all the new green growth is sprouting up all around me. Very fresh and lively!

I wondered if the spices would overwhelm the Laoshan Green Tea, though, because they smell so strong in the dry leaf … but David at Verdant Tea mixed this blend skillfully and with great attention to achieving balance.  This tastes and feels very nicely rounded on the palate, offering hints of pepper, citrus, mint and vegetative green notes, but without one flavor overpowering another.

The first few sips, I tasted the green tea – front and center!  And that’s just the way it should be.  This is a green tea blend … not a spice blend with green tea.  It is sweet and creamy, with hints of creaminess – maybe somewhere between fresh cream and butter – and notes of whole grain.  It is a great base to use with the spices that were chosen for this blend.

The coriander is probably the most immediately recognized spice, but the cardamom comes in just after that.  They provide warmth in the form of a peppery tone – this is more of a savory pepper than a spicy-hot one though – and I think that it has enough of a subtly about it that even those who tend to shy away from “spicy” blends could enjoy this … this is not a chai!

About mid-cup, I start to notice the crisp, minty tones of the tulsi and peppermint.  These are very subtle, and I like how they were added to the blend – not with a heavy hand, but with a plan to utilize these herbs as accentuating components rather than the main event.  Instead of tasting strongly of mint – it tastes crisp, zesty, cool… very fresh and exhilarating, without overpowering the cup.

This is very refreshing iced, too.  It’s almost a completely different tea!  The mint is much more prominent in the cooled version, but the peppery tones of the spices are also there, offering accents to the mint.  I’d describe it as a new twist – or perhaps a twisted new version – of a Moroccan Mint.  And it’s a very nice twist indeed!
