Taster’s Review:

After having such a positive experience with Chico Chai’s Strong Brew Concentrate, I really looked forward to trying some of their loose leaf offerings.  Fortunately, the good people at Chico Chai sent me a “Chico Chai Sampler,” and let me just say I love this little box!  It’s a small box that is just big enough to fit four small tins of tea – one of each of the chai blends that Chico Chai offers.  This is an awesome way to sample each of the loose leaf chai blends from them.  Everything is packaged beautifully … this is the kind of thing that I love getting in the mail!  And it would make an excellent gift for the chai lover on your gift giving list, too.

The first of the loose leaf chai blends that I decided to try was the Mate Chai from Chico Chai, mostly because I really needed that vigorous SHAKE awake that Yerba Mate provides.  I have been feeling sluggish today, like I could easily go back to bed and sleep another couple of hours, but, I’ve got stuff to do!  I can’t nap the day away.

So, it’s Yerba Mate to the rescue!

This has a delightfully spicy fragrance, and what I like best about the aroma of this chai is that no one spice stands out amongst the others in this blend.  I smell notes of all the components, and it smells like a mouth-watering medley of warm spice that evokes thoughts of chilly autumn days (they’re coming!  they’re coming!)

I brewed the tea strong (using a little extra leaf) in near boiling water – I find that when I use boiling water for Yerba Mate, it results in a slightly bitter tasting mate.  Drop the temperature to 195°F and you can brew this herb for ten minutes (or even longer) and I don’t taste any bitterness!  I brewed it extra strong because I wanted a latte.

But, I did try it first without the “latte” … and while it was strong … it is a very flavorful chai!  Lots of peppery spice … this chai is not for the weak!  If you tend to cower at the idea of spicy heat … this chai is too much for you … but for those of you who like your chai to bite you when you take a sip … this is one you need to try!

As a latte, the spices are softened somewhat … that is, they aren’t quite as edgy as they were when I tried it straight up.  But, there is still plenty of heat from this chai when served with a splash of warmed milk.  The ginger and pepper are prominent, and I can feel their warmth develop at the back of my tongue and radiate to the top of my throat.  It warms me so wonderfully … this is just what I need on a chilly day like today!

I like that while this chai seems to focus on the ginger and pepper, I can also taste the cinnamon, cardamom and the nutmeg.  It’s sweet and spicy and earthy … and with the addition of the milk, it’s so nice and creamy too!  It tastes really good served warm but it’s also delicious as it cools.  (An iced chai latte, anyone?)

And the Yerba Mate did in fact help energize and WAKE me up!  This chai gets two enthusiastic thumbs up from me.

Mandarin Masala Chai from Blue Lotus Chai

Taster’s Review:

This Mandarin Masala Chai from Blue Lotus Chai is really different than I expected.  As I was preparing it, I kind of expected a sort of “holiday-ish” type black tea blend … you know what I’m talking about, right?  The usual “cinnamon and orange” type holiday black tea.

But this isn’t that holiday orange tea at all!  That’s not to say that I don’t like those holiday orange teas – I enjoy them!  I’m just saying that this tastes quite different from what I was anticipating it to taste like.

Before I wrote this review, I tried this tea a couple of different ways.  The first preparation – I prepared it the way I had prepared the other Blue Lotus Chai teas that I’ve enjoyed in the past, with a 1:1 ratio of hot water and steamed milk, and a heaping scoop of the Mandarin Masala Chai mix.  (The most adorable little bamboo scoop is included in the package!)  Then I stirred vigorously until the mix was completely incorporated.  Then I got out my hand held frother to give the top a little bit if a foamy texture.

It’s yummy prepared this way.  The tangerine/orange flavors together with the milk give a sort of “creamsicle” type of flavor, which is actually more of an accent flavor than a strong presence in the cup.

The spices are the main focus of this chai (as well they should be … this IS a chai!)  I can really taste the nutmeg here.  In the other Blue Lotus Chai blends, I could taste the nutmeg … but here, it really comes into its own … perhaps it’s the orange-y notes that really play to the nutmeg here to bring it out.  The pepper is well-pronounced.  The other spices are also strong … but, unlike some of those aforementioned holiday blends … this is NOT all about the cinnamon.  This is not one of those sweet, cinnamon red-hot kind of teas.  This is a chai and I taste the ginger and the black pepper … I taste the cinnamon and the nutmeg … and I taste the cardamom and the cloves!  It’s a magnificent blend of spices!  The black tea is also discernible, but, as I say … the spices are the main event here.

For my second cup of this chai, I decided to omit the milk and prepare this with just eight ounces of boiling water to see if the orange/tangerine flavors are more pronounced in just water versus the water/milk combination.

I actually prefer this particular chai from Blue Lotus Chai without the milk.  It’s still nice and spicy, but I taste the tangerine and orange notes better.  It’s brighter and more citrus-y … it’s really ZESTY like this … the spices seem to literally dance on the palate.  It is spicy and absolutely delicious!

So, there you have it … I’ve tried all five of the chai blends that Blue Lotus Chai offers … and I’ve enjoyed them all.  My favorite is still the Star Anise Masala Chai, but I would recommend all of these chai blends to anyone looking for a delicious chai!  And since autumn is nearly here (I hope so, because I’m really tired of the heat!) the time is perfect for a yummy chai!

Taster’s Review:

It would seem that lately, I’m on a bit of a chai kick.  What can I say?  At the first signs of autumn, I’m all about the chai!  Now, I’ll happily consume a chai latte any time of year, but, there’s just something that is so rewarding about sipping a chai – whether it be a latte or drinking it non-latte with just a dollop of honey to bring out those spices.  Nothing tastes more like autumn to me than a good cup of chai!

Right now, I’m enjoying this Chico Chai Strong Brew Chai Concentrate from Chico Chai as a blended ice drink.  I measured out a combination of ice cubes and milk into the blender, and then added the same amount (OK … I admit it, I eyeballed it!) of the strong brew concentrate into the blender and blended it until it was smooth.

Side note:  My husband would like me to add that the blender is loud.  Ha!  When I operated the blender, he thought I was making a chocolate milkshake, and when I told him what it was and that I’d be writing a review, he asked me what I thought of my iced chai drink and I told him “It’s YUMMY!” and he says, there you go.  That’s your review.  Tell them that it’s yummy and your blender is loud.

I am really enjoying this blended drink.  It is cool and frosty and refreshing – but with just enough spice to get my taste buds all warmed up and tingling!  This is sweet – but not too sweet.  (I didn’t add any additional sweeteners to this blended drink.  It is just ice cubes, milk, and the strong brew concentrate.)  I get a good amount of peppery taste from the ginger … ginger is the note that stands out strongest to me.

The peppery quality of the ginger is accentuated with black pepper, and as I continue to drink this icy beverage, I notice the pepper more and more.   I also taste the rich black tea in the background.  It’s a malty black tea – but in this concentrate, I notice no signs of bitterness.  Just a good, strong black tea flavor.

I taste hints of nutmeg.  Ohhh I like the nutmeg!  There are notes of cinnamon, anise, clove and cardamom.  It’s a warm and comforting combination of spices … and it’s spicy, but it’s not a spicy-hot kind of spicy.  It’s more of a comforting warmth that I’d liken to curling up with a good book in front of a crackling fire … that warm, cozy feeling with just enough heat to keep the taste buds dancing.

As delicious as my blended ice beverage was … serving this hot with a 1:1 ratio with milk is even better!  I actually used a combination of half 1% milk and half half & half (did that make sense?  ha!  that is to say that my milk was one part 1% milk and one part half & half!) because I don’t really care for 1% milk but my hubby prefers it.  So, I usually doctor up the 1% with some half & half to give me that creamy taste that I miss with the 1% on its own.

Once I measured out the milk, I brought it to a steamy heat and then frothed it a little bit with my hand held frother.  Then I added the strong brew chai concentrate and heated it up a little bit (Since this product is stored in the fridge and I wanted a hot latte) and frothed it a little more.  The result is a creamy, frothy, deliciously decadent treat that is better than what I’ve ever had from any coffee house!

This is spicy and sweet … but not too sweet.  Of all the sweetened chai concentrates that I’ve tasted, this is definitely one of the best ones (if not THE best) that I’ve tried because it isn’t overly sweet.  This is JUST the way I like it.  Sweet but not cloying.  Spicy but my mouth isn’t on fire.  The spices here are balanced in such a way that I can enjoy all the little nuances of the different spices as well as the black tea … and none of these are overwhelmed by the milk.

This is pure chai JOY!  I’m absolutely loving this stuff!

Jungle Monkey Chai Rooibos Blend from Tea Xotics

Taster’s Review:

Yes, August has come and gone, and I’m now reviewing my first of the August teas from my Amoda Box.  That’s because Amoda updated their website (and it looks fabulous, might I add!) and I wanted to wait until the new website was up and running before I started reviewing the teas from August.

It’s a rare thing when the first tea that I try from my monthly Amoda Tea Tasting Box is a tisane!  But, this Jungle Monkey Chai Rooibos blend from Tea Xotics just sounded too yummy to not try immediately:  a rooibos based masala spice blend, combined with chocolate, banana and coconut?  Oh YUM!

And it is indeed yum!

The aroma of the blend is spicy … the cinnamon really pops out and grabs me. The chai is definitely a cinnamon-y chai, with the cinnamon serving as the strongest flavor in the masala blend.  I also taste peppery notes, and hints of clove.

The coconut is the next flavor I notice … it adds a creamy texture and taste to the cup.  The banana comes through next, and it’s a subtle banana note.  The chocolate is there too, and I taste it … I just wish … I was tasting MORE chocolate.  (Remember this chocoholic’s chocolate rule of thumb: some chocolate = good, more chocolate = better.)

The flavor of the rooibos comes through here too, which I found kind of surprising given all that’s going on in this chai blend.  I expected the flavor of the rooibos to be buried beneath all the other flavor components.  But, I taste the woody notes of the rooibos, and even that funky note of rooibos that I usually don’t really care for … but somehow … it works in this blend.  I guess with the tropical notes of banana and coconut … that funkiness just sort of works.

Overall:  this is a really tasty blend.  I like the chocolate but I wish there was more of it.  I like the banana and the coconut … and the spices.  It just really … works together really very well.

This is the first tea that I’ve tried from Tea Xotics … and I’m really glad that Amoda Tea decided to make them their feature blender for the month of August, because I am really looking forward to what the other blends have in store for me!

PRODUCT REVIEW: Ready-to-Drink Original Iced Bhakti Chai

Taster’s Review:

While out shopping at Whole Foods, I found Bhakti Chai!  Having previously tried their Chai concentrates, I knew I would enjoy this Ready-to-Drink Original Iced Bhakti Chai, so I grabbed a bottle of it.  (In case you’re wondering, my favorite of the concentrates is the Unsweetened Chai.)

I really enjoyed this RTD Chai … although, I must say that I really prefer the concentrate because I can control the type (and amount) of milk product that is added.  This ready-to-drink iced chai is made with soy milk, and I found the texture of this to be somewhat lacking.

Yeah, I know it’s the hip thing to like soy milk, but, I prefer good old cow’s milk.  Or, if I need to go dairy-free, I’ll go with an almond milk.  Soy just doesn’t do it for me.  One thing I will say about the soy … it was less creamy and heavy tasting, which was nice for this very warm, end of the summer day.

But I was happy that this tasted as spicy as I remember Bhakti Chai tasting.  Lots of fiery ginger and warm spice.  This is sweetened, so it is a little sweeter than I usually go for when it comes to chai but, it is still a really tasty RTD, and better than a lot of the RTDs that are out there.

Overall, I really enjoyed this Chai, and I was happy to find it at my local Whole Foods.  I tried to find the concentrate at Whole Foods too, but, I didn’t find it anywhere.  I would love for them to start carrying the concentrate because this is a yummy, delicious, ginger-y chai!
