Organic Vanilla Almond Sachet from Boston Tea Company

This morning my tea infusers are all full of teas that I plan to re-steep but don’t currently feel like drinking, so I decided that now is the perfect time to try this tea, which comes in a handy and elegant pyramid-shaped sachet. I steeped it for five minutes, which I spent wondering if it would taste like a baked good. I mean, vanilla and almond flavoring are two of the most common flavorings for cookies and stuff, right?

Upon tasting it, I found the flavor pleasantly sweet even before I added milk and sugar. I found that because of its natural sweetness it didn’t require very much sugar. I think the flavor goes perfectly with milk, though, and the aroma and aftertaste are just as nice as the actual taste, which is a big plus. I was happy that it didn’t leave an odd aftertaste like some teas do. Instead, my mouth felt fresh and almondy after each sip.
The steeping recommendations said to steep this tea for 3-5 minutes. I allowed the relatively light color to fool me into thinking it needed to be steeped for longer, so I opted for 5 minutes rather than 3. I think this was a mistake because I couldn’t easily the vanilla through the almond. It still tasted great, but if you’re hoping to taste the vanilla you might want to not steep it quite so long. I tried a second steeping and it came out a bit more balanced after 3.5 minutes. So it seems you can adjust the steeping times based on how strong you like your almond flavoring and what flavor balance you prefer.
All in all, this was a sweet, pleasant, friendly tea. I enjoyed it as a breakfast tea and I think it would be great as a dessert tea as well.

Taster’s Review:

Seldom do I make chai lattes anymore, usually, when I drink a chai, I drink it straight.  Sure, I still do love the creamy, spicy goodness of a chai latte, but I’ve been discovering just how lovely a chai tea is without the milk.  When brewed in boiling water, and just a touch of turbinado sugar is added to enhance the spices.  It becomes a lovely, warm and spicy blend that is delicious no matter what the weather is like outside – at the moment, it’s 72°F outside – a bit on the warm side and the sun is shining brightly, but, I still find this warm, spicy chai (served hot, no less!) to be absolutely refreshing.

When I first opened the package, I could smell the cardamom.  It had a delicious, exotic warmth as well as a hint of bright citrus tones and I could feel my mouth start to water just from experiencing the aroma of this chai.  I stood impatiently over my timer today … I WANTED – perhaps even NEEDED – this tea!

And this chai was indeed worth the wait.  It is gently sweet from the turbinado sugar (I added about a half a teaspoon), but more than the sweetness I notice the depth of the enchanting spices.  I like that the ginger and cinnamon do not overwhelm the cup – which is so common in chai blends, it seems – they are more of a background flavor.  The cardamom and the cloves tend to be the strongest spices here.  The anise is also in the background, offering its unique sweetness to the overall flavor.

I like that I can taste the tea here too.  It is rich, a little malty and smooth.  It is not bitter (although, I wouldn’t recommend over-steeping it, as that may cause bitterness), and it finishes with a tangy astringency.  The spices compliment the black tea quite nicely, providing a cup that is robust with black tea flavor as well as invigorating spices.

I really enjoyed this lively chai, and I like that it is available in both loose leaf and sachet form.  At the time of this writing, I noticed that this is currently out of stock – I hope their supply is replenished soon!

Tasters Review:

Bombay Chai from Boston Tea Company is a mellow to medium spiced chai but I like the natural-citrusy flavor that comes thru – it isn’t too overbearing…and I like that!  The best part is you can still taste the ‘black tea’ in this chai!  This is a nice sipping or gulping tea…good hot or cold!

A nice, versatile Chai!

Taster’s Review:

I probably say this a lot, but, this bagged tea surprised me.  It has a lot of flavor for a bagged tea… it has a lot of flavor for a white tea!  It’s just really flavorful and quite tasty.

The pomegranate flavor is well-defined.  It is juicy, tangy and pleasantly sweet.  The pomegranate tastes like true pomegranate flavor.  It has a very nice fruit flavor without overwhelming the softer flavors of the white tea.  The white tea is very nicely balanced with the pomegranate flavor.  It has a lovely sweetness to it, and a freshness that reminds me of clean spring air.

This is a delicious white tea that is wonderful when served hot, but even better when served iced!  It is so refreshing and bright.  This should be a summertime staple in every tea lover’s cabinet!

Taster’s Review:

When it comes to Earl Grey, it would seem that every tea company out there has one.  (Yeah, I know there’s a joke in there, but, not one I care to use when talking about one of my favorite types of tea!)  What I’ve learned over the years about those many Earl Grey choices is that even though they share the same name, they certainly do not taste the same.  Some are definitely better than others.

This is a pretty good Earl Grey.  It is especially good when considering that it’s a bagged Earl Grey.  The truth be known, I’ve not had a lot of luck when it comes to bagged Earl Grey varieties.  I’ve found a few that I’ve enjoyed, but I’ve also found a few that I was unable to finish the cup.  This one – I’m enjoying!

The bergamot is strong and flavorful.  It has a delicious citrus-y taste that is sweet, with that sharp edge for which bergamot is known.  There is not quite so much of a flowery/perfume-y quality to this bergamot as in some Earl Grey, so if you are one who might find that perfume-ish flavor somewhat off-putting, this Earl Grey may just be right up your alley.

The black tea in this blend is brisk and tasty.  It is not bitter and has very little astringency to it.  There is a pleasing tone of sweetness to the overall cup.

This is an Earl Grey that I’m likely to keep on hand.  It is one of the better bagged Earl Grey varieties that I’ve encountered and while I do prefer loose leaf to bagged teas, there are times when I appreciate the convenience of bagged tea, especially when I’ve a busy day ahead and don’t have time to spend in the kitchen, measuring, brewing and straining tea.  I still want to enjoy my morning tea, and good tea bags such as this one give me that option!
