Tasters Review:

This is Alishan – a Medium Charcoal – that sums it up!

The Alishan is lovely and I wasn’t sure if I would be able to still taste it the way I was hoping…but I can and I’m VERY pleased!

The Charcoal flavor is pretty good as well!  At first I thought it was a bit stronger than what I would consider Medium-Roasted but after a few sips I totally agree!

Right in the middle of the sip I can taste a welcoming creaminess ‘sandwiched’ in between the roasted and charcoal tastes at the beginning and end of the sip.

This is a nifty Charcoal/Alishan! Then again…it’s from T-oolongtea and I’ve enjoyed just about everything I’ve tried from them!  Very good quality Oolongs!

Taster’s Review:

It’s probably no surprise to people out there that I’ve accumulated a vast quantity of tea.  I’m pretty much surrounded by tea, and that’s just the way I like it.  But even with all this tea around me, I still get really excited when it comes time to try an Alishan Oolong – which is my favorite type of Oolong tea.  And when it is an Alishan Oolong from T-Oolong Tea, the excitement multiplies, because I’ve come to appreciate the level of quality that T-Oolong Tea offers.  Their teas are always top-notch, and this Alishan Charcoal Fire Medium Roast is no exception!  This is outstanding!

It’s the charcoal roasting that makes the difference here, creating an Alishan experience for me that is quite different from others I’ve had.  I still taste some of what I recognize as Alishan – the smooth, sweet, floral-y notes, but these notes seem to fill the background while the notes of charcoal and toasty, wood-roasted flavor take the foreground.

The crisp, floral sweetness of the Alishan peeks through the more rugged taste of the charcoal notes, and I notice a bit more of a mineral-y kind of taste and texture, a bit more earthiness, and even notes of sweet, toasted nuts.  The charcoal firing has added such a lovely dimension of flavor, creating a taste that is quite different from other Alishan teas that I’ve tasted … not better or worse, really, just different, and I am really enjoying the differences.

Deliciously different!

Taster’s Review:

I know I’ve said it before.  I’ll probably say it again and again… I’m sorry if you get tired of hearing it, but, what can I say?  I love Oolong tea grown in the Ali Mountains… the mountains that produce my beloved Alishan Oolong!

Jin Xuan is probably better known as “Milk Oolong” which makes this particular Oolong even more special.  It’s not just an Alishan Oolong, but an Alishan Milk Oolong!  Awesomeness!

And this cup of tea is indeed awesome.  The milkiness of this tea is not overly pronounced, it is delicate and creamy.  Very smooth.  I like the texture which is slightly creamy but there is a subtlety to it too.  It doesn’t attempt to inundate the palate with a heavy taste of cream.

Hints of flower throughout the sip … is that orchid?  It too is subtle, softly weaving its way in and out of the sip, and just when you think you can identify it, it disappears … and reappears just when you’ve begun to explore the other nuances of the tea.

Subsequent infusions deliver a stronger flavor.  I find that with the first cup (which is the combined results of the first and second infusions) the flavor was delicate, while the second cup (combined results of the third and fourth infusions) is stronger, with a more distinguished floral tone.  This tastes of honeysuckle, but an orchid note begins to develop toward the finish and lingers into the aftertaste.  It is still sweet and delicious, but I’ve noticed that it is a little less creamy than the first cup.

The third cup brings a taste that is much more harmonized … the flavors are becoming seamlessly united, and it has become difficult to determine where one flavor ends and another begins.  This cup is my favorite, because I love how it all comes together to create a very soothing, delightful cup.

An amazing cup of tea – I’d recommend it to fans of Alishan and Milk Oolongs!  This brings the best of both worlds together in one deliciously rewarding cup.

Taster’s Review:

Alishan!  Alishan!  Alishan!

When I first started drinking Oolong tea, I tried Formosa Oolong, and I loved it.  I was very new to tea back then (although I probably didn’t think I was), and I had no idea that there were other Oolong teas.  I thought Oolong tea = Formosa Oolong, and that’s it.

A few years later, I experienced my first “green” Oolong, and I was astonished!  It was so different from the Oolong I was used to.  And I liked what I tasted, but still, my heart remained true to my beloved Formosa Oolong.

Another year or so later, I tried my first Alishan Oolong.  It was love at first sip!  Since that time, I’ve tried many Alishan Oolong teas, and I am still so amazed at how different two Alishan teas can taste from one another… not to mention how different an Alishan tastes from a Formosa Oolong.  This is one reason why I adore Oolong … it’s always an adventure.

And while Formosa Oolong teas still hold a special place in my heart, I must say that my favorite Oolong tea is Alishan.  I even have my own Yixing Mug that’s dedicated just to Alishan Oolong.

This Alishan is phenomenal.  So smooth, sweet and delicious!  Very floral, but also with a fruitier background than I usually associate with Alishan.  The floral tones here are not sharp or pungent, they are quite smooth … almost creamy!  There is a pleasing honey-like tone to the flavor, and it has a thick, luscious mouthfeel.

This Alishan takes my breath away, it’s so good!  I love it!

Pure Heart Alishan from Asha Tea House

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Oolong

Where to Buy:  Asha Tea House

Product Description:

Spring 2011
Tai He District, Ali Shan, Taiwan
Tea master:  Mr. Li

Handpicked leaves. Top quality production by Mr. Li.

A sweet aroma reminiscent of a brisk, high mountain sunrises and sweet green vegetation.

From the “Pure Heart,” or Qing Xin / 清心 varietal, considered the most pure representation of high mountain tea.

If we had to describe this tea in one sentence:

White tea is elegant, green tea is pure, and black tea is bold, but a fine Oolong is all three and more.

Taster’s Review:

As I’ve mentioned once or twice before, I absolutely adore Ali Shan Oolong.  It is my favorite of all the Oolong teas.  I even have a special Yixing Tea Mug that is for my Ali Shan consumption (and I really need to start using it more often!)

And this Pure Heart Alishan from Asha Tea House is fantastic (and as the above description suggests, it’s incredibly fresh, too!)  It starts out light  and crisp.  Very pure … just like the above statement from Asha Tea House suggests, it’s a green tea kind of pure.  And as I continue to sip from my Yixing mug, the flavors multiply upon my palate.  The soft mouthfeel develops, as does a beautiful floral sweetness.

Unlike some other Alishan Oolong teas that can be somewhat buttery or even of syrupy consistency, this tends to be lighter and softer.  It doesn’t feel as thick on the palate, allowing it to explore the nuances of the floral tones.  I don’t taste as much of the vegetative taste.  Instead, I taste a clean, flowery taste that reminds me of the air in a garden in the early spring, just as the flowers are beginning to bloom.

A delightful Alishan.  If you enjoy Alishan Oolong teas, you need to try this one!
