Taster’s Review:

I’m making more of an effort to drink more tisanes in the evening.  Until recently, I would continue drinking Camellia Sinensis teas well into the evening, up to just a couple of hours before I go to bed.  And I’ve come to realize that it does affect my ability to fall asleep.  So, when it starts getting close to bedtime, I’ve been turning to caffeine free drinks like rooibos and honeybush, and on the nights when I know I need to catch some zzz … I even have a chamomile tea.  I’ve noticed a difference with my sleeping patterns now that I’m drinking more tisane later in the evening.

Tonight, I wanted something soothing on my tummy, so I reached for this Rooibos Ginger Peach from Tea of Life.  I like that it’s sweet from the peach notes and the honeyed, nutty flavors of the rooibos, but there’s just enough of a zesty kick from the ginger to give the cup some contrasting flavor.

The ginger isn’t an overpowering flavor.  It starts out rather subtle.  The first couple of sips, I could barely taste the ginger.  But as I continued to sip, the ginger flavor began to develop, and now there is a gentle heat at the back of the palate.  I feel the warmth of the ginger but it’s not too hot.

And the sweetness of the peach curbs the zing of the ginger.  Ginger and peach are a classic flavor combination and they really complement each other well in this tisane.

The rooibos is sweet, slightly earthy and nutty but I like that the drink doesn’t taste too strongly of rooibos, which is not my favorite flavor.  The natural honey-like sweetness melds quite nicely with the peach and ginger notes.

Overall, a pleasant cup to enjoy later in the day.

Taster’s Review:

I confess that the first time I had a cup of this tisane, I accidentally oversteeped it.  I had started it brewing and walked away and forgot about it.  Some twenty to twenty five minutes later, I remembered it.  Fortunately, it’s a rooibos blend and rooibos doesn’t get bitter the way a tea (Camellia Sinensis) would.

However, I didn’t figure it would be a fair assessment to write this review based upon that steeping, so I waited until the next evening (tonight!) to try brewing it for my usual steep time for a rooibos tisane (ten minutes) and this time actually setting a timer for it.

And while this review will be based upon my cup from the 10 minute steep, I will also add some thoughts on the cup that steeped longer.  (Both cups were steeped with 195°F water.)

This is a very flavorful rooibos blend.  It seems a simple enough combination:  rooibos, vanilla and cinnamon.  This combination makes me think “Snickerdoodle” and well, it does have a snickerdoodle-ish taste to it.  The rooibos has a sweet, nutty flavor to it, and when combined with the vanilla and cinnamon, the result is a taste that’s a lot like the classic cookie.

The cinnamon is a warm but not spicy cinnamon taste, and one that marries well with the sweet, creamy notes of vanilla as well as the warm, honey-like sweetness of the rooibos.  It’s a pleasant cup of tea that’s not too sweet, but makes a nice late-night snack if you’re craving something just a little sweet but don’t want to wreck your diet by indulging in a real snickerdoodle cookie.  This tea makes a tasty and healthier substitute.

Taster’s Review:

This tisane has a lot going on!  And while it may have a lot of ingredients, they all seem to work together in a very tasty way.  It is fruity, sweet, tart, and warmly spiced, and I love the contrast in flavors.

What I’m liking best about this particular tisane is that this is more like a medley of flavors rather than a focus on one or two.  The different components of this blend work together to create a seamless, unified taste that isn’t really distinctly one flavor or another, but more of a combined effort of all the flavors into one unique taste.

Notes of subtle spice are there from the cinnamon and cardamom.  These two spices offer a mellow, gentle warmth that accentuates the nutty flavor of the rooibos and the citrus notes of grapefruit, lemongrass, and orange.

The rooibos is not a strong flavor, but there are some nutty tones.  The papaya offers some sweetness, as does the apple, while the cranberry offers a light tartness that plays well with the citrus-y flavors.

It’s a harmonious blend of spices and fruit with hints of nutty sweetness.  A really tasty cup – this is the kind of rooibos blend that I tend to appreciate most, where the rooibos doesn’t present a strong flavor profile, instead it becomes part of a combined flavor.

A really tasty herbal that’s naturally caffeine free, it tastes great hot, but I like it even better iced!

Taster’s Review:

Well, as I’m writing this, it’s late at night.  I’m a night owl.  My husband works the swing shift (although his shift is about to change!  This may change my sleeping habits.)   Because of his odd hours, I stay up later to be awake when he arrives home so that I can fix him something to eat and maybe watch TV and spend a little time with him before heading to bed.  Another bonus to staying up later – at least in the summer! – is that it’s cooler at night so I get to enjoy some cool temperatures rather than trying to battle the heat.  It’s been a hot summer so far!

Anyway … when its later at night, I like to sip on something that’s caffeine free, so that’s the time that I typically reach for a tisane like this Vanilla Rooibos Chai blend from The Persimmon Tree.  I can still enjoy a spicy-sweet treat in my teacup without having to worry that it’s going to keep me awake when I should be trying to catch some Zzz’s.

This smells awesome.  It’s a medley of aromas:  orange, cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger and cardamom.  I can even smell the nutty sweetness of the rooibos, but I like that this is more of an understated scent, and the fragrance of the spices are prominent.

This is true of the flavor as well.  Sure I taste the nutty, honeyed sweetness of the rooibos herb, but, it unifies with the spices and the orange to create a very seamless flavor that’s evoking thoughts of a spice cookie.

The spices are zesty.  The ginger adds a real punch of spice along with the cinnamon.  This is a warmer cinnamon, almost like a red-hot type of cinnamon flavor but without the overly cloying candied sweetness.  The cardamom and cloves add a warm backdrop of spice and the vanilla softens the flavors just a little bit, giving the overall cup a lightly sweet, creamy tone.

I like the touch of orange to this – it really brightens the cup and perks up the flavors of the tisane.  Everything comes together in a very pleasing way.  It’s sweet, spicy and tasty.  It’s reminiscent of the cooler days of the holiday season when yummy things are baking in the kitchen, and that’s a very welcome flavor to enjoy on this late evening.

Taster’s Review:

As I’m writing this review, it’s rather late in the evening.  A little too late to indulge in something caffeinated.  Caffeine in tea doesn’t usually overstimulate me but, I am still cautious once it is past a certain hour, because I don’t want to take a chance that I’ll be kept up from drinking too much caffeine.  So I decided to try one of my caffeine-free choices, and this Rooibos Spiced Chai is what I grabbed.

Hmm … it’s alright.  Not the best rooibos chai blends that I’ve tried.  I’m finding it to be just a wee bit thin, not just in body but also in spiced flavor.  I taste cinnamon and cloves, but I didn’t taste any other spice notes, and I guess that’s because the ingredients only list cloves and cinnamon.  I don’t really consider that to be a chai … but OK.  For me to think “chai” I want some peppery spices, perhaps some black pepper or ginger.  Some cardamom would be nice too.

But overall, it’s not a bad tasting rooibos chai.  It has a nice, honey-esque flavor to it, and the nutty flavor of the rooibos seems to accentuate the warm spice notes of the cinnamon and the cloves.  I like the way the earthiness of the spice plays with the natural earthiness of the rooibos.  It’s a pleasant, warm and cozy type of blend, and I found it helped to calm and relax me, which is what I want this time of night.

I don’t know if I’d buy this again.  It’s not something I’d put on my must have list nor would I make it a staple of my tea cupboard.  But it’s tasty.
