Leaf Type: Black
Where to Buy: TeaFrog
Company Description:
This version of Earl Grey will suit the tastes of both traditional EG drinkers, and those who find bergamot to be too overpowering. Vanilla overtones and a smooth, creamy taste are in the forefront of the flavours of this tea, and while the bergamot is there, it takes a backup role in this fine flavoured black tea. Whether you are a fan of Earl Grey Tea or not, this tea will suit the palate of any discerning tea drinker, and serves well as an after dinner finishing drink or a mid-afternoon “snack”.
Ingredients: Black Tea, Cornflower petals, Natural Flavours
Taster’s Review:
I love Earl Grey tea. But, I have to tell you that my fondness for Earl Grey started out with a Cream Earl Grey such as this one. The first time I tasted an Earl Grey tea, I found that the bergamot was a bit overpowering for me – to the point of tasting a bit like perfume (or at least what I imagined perfume would taste like). After that unpleasant experience, I was quite hesitant to try another Earl Grey.
Then I discovered Cream Earl Grey tea and I quickly fell in love. So much so that I began blending my own Earl Grey Creme… but that’s another story!
This Cream Earl Grey from TeaFrog is quite good. I love the way the vanilla flavoring (the “Cream”) mingles with the bergamot and black tea. Together they create an almost caramel-y taste that lingers well into the finish.
The black tea base is a solid black tea: strong but not overwhelming, smooth with a bold, bright taste. It has a medium astringency to it that is somewhat dry. No bitterness to this tea, though (unless it’s over-steeped that is!) Just a delicious, well-rounded tea.
The bergamot is significantly softer than you would find in most Earl Grey teas, but that’s because the vanilla cream taste softens it. I like that it curbs the sharp notes of the bergamot, thereby eliminating that tendency to taste a bit soapy or perfume-ish. Instead, you just get delicious Earl Grey flavor with a sweet, creamy high note.
This is a really delicious Cream Earl Grey – if you’re like me and rather fond of Earl Grey (or Cream Earl Grey) – this is one you should definitely try.
