Taster’s Review:

When I got my Matcha Infused Genmaicha Green Tea from Aiya sample in the mail I had to brew it right up! I love Genmaicha but I really love Genmaicha with Matcha! It has been a long time since I had a Genmaicha with Matcha from a new company to try so I was really excited to get a sample of this one, from Aiya, who sources excellent tea.

When I came to the site here to do the review I noticed my sister LiberTeas had just posted her review, which you can see here. I almost decided to wait because generally we don’t do reviews of the same teas back to back, but in this case, I already had my sample steeped up and was happily sipping, so back to back it shall be! It can’t hurt either to see two tasting notes on the same tea one day after another.

This Genmaicha with Matcha is far more vegetal and grassy than others I have tried. Others have had a bit sweeter taste. No one can deny the quality of this tea, although I am rather used to the sweetness I have found in others, this is a really excellent cup.

There is an abundant amount of genmai (rice), and while my sister did not get much loose powder from excess matcha in her cup, I did, especially on the first steep. However, like my sister, I also did not see any cloudiness, and the cup was remarkably clear.

The scent of the tea filled the entire house, not just my kitchen, and my daughter remarked how good it smelled, like puffed rice cereal, which I love.

The notes I detect are of grassiness, nuttiness, and rice. There is a creaminess to the mouthfeel as well.

The sencha, crisp and lively, is one of the better sencha I have tasted.

I found this cup extremely relaxing and soothing.

Marshmallow Treat Genmaicha from 52Teas

marshmallowtreatgenmaichaTea Information:

Leaf Type:  Green

Where to Buy:  52Teas

Product Description:

Had some extra genmaicha (and a little bit of uji (matcha mixed with-) genmaicha that we blended together to create this awesome blend. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough of anything to make it a tea of the week, so here’s a bonus blend (VERY LIMITED EDITION) for this week.

We’ve blended genmaicha (Japanese sencha (I got it before the earthquake, so no worries) blended with toasted rice) with mini marshmallows and natural flavors. This blend is going to go FAST, and we won’t be able to blend any more for a while, if we ever do, so DO NOT drag your feet about this one.

Taster’s Review:

I want to preface this review by saying that the package of Marshmallow Treat Genmaicha that I ordered was from the original batch, not the re-blend.  The re-blended Marshmallow Treat Genmaicha is slightly different in that it was made vegan, using marshmallow root rather than mini marshmallows.  In addition, the re-blended batch did not contain the Uji Genmaicha (Genmaicha + Matcha).  It is the original batch that I will be reviewing here, and I don’t know how different the flavor will be from the re-blended batch.

Now, with that said, let’s get to the review!

This is AWESOME!  I think I have only tried one other flavored Genmaicha from 52Teas (the Malted Genmaicha) and while I did really enjoy that one, this particular blend takes Genmaicha to a whole other level.  It is amazing.

The Sencha is light-bodied with faint vegetative notes.  It tastes fresh without tasting too grassy.  And I really am enjoying the hint of Matcha in there – it lends a creamy, smooth flavor to the cup that melds perfectly with the other flavors.  The Matcha contribution is not a strong one, but, it is enough to keep the palate intrigued.  And, of course, the toasty, sweet flavor of the popped rice is right on target with the Marshmallow Treat concept.

The mini-marshmallows melt in the hot water, and give just a little bit of creamy texture to the cup, as well as the expected sweetness.  (No additional sweetener is needed here!)  I really love the addition of the mini-marshmallows, they do really enhance the flavor of the cup.  It makes me wonder how the marshmallow root compares.

Yet another example of why 52Teas is my favorite tea company!

Cocoa Raspberry Maté from Fusion Tea Room

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Yerba Maté & Rooibos

Where to Buy:  Fusion Tea Room

Product Description:

Rich Argentinean roasted yerba mate with a cocoa raspberry twist. While both of these flavors are wonderful by themselves we just had to try them together to blast your taste buds. One cup just isn’t enough with this fusion blend. Once you have this in the morning, you will never have to rely on your coffee pick me up again. Throw in a splash of milk or creamer and you have got yourself one irresistible cup of mate.

Taster’s Review:

Irresistible is right!  This is so yummy, I don’t want to put my teacup down!

The combination of both roasted Yerba Maté and green Yerba Maté offers a well-rounded flavor that is deep, earthy and toasted, with hints of vegetation.  The toasted flavor is further accentuated by the addition of toasted rice, which also lends a bit of sweetness to the overall cup.

The rooibos in the blend lends a certain lightness as well as a hint of nutty flavor, which compliments the almond note quite nicely.  The barley and chicory present a nice depth of flavor to this tisane, giving it a very satisfying, full flavor.  The result is a smooth tasting base that allows the flavors of chocolate and raspberry to express themselves well.

The chocolate tastes rich and creamy.  The raspberry takes a couple of sips to develop, but after that development, the berry “tingle” lingers in the aftertaste deliciously.  These two ingredients are a classic paring in the dessert world, making this tisane a delightful dessert tea or an indulgent way to start your morning.

I really enjoyed this cup.  Rich, sweet and flavorful, even when served neat and clean.  I personally prefer my Yerba Maté with just a little bit of sweetener to help curb some of the bitter tones it can sometimes have, but, to be honest, I don’t get much bitterness at all from this cup.  I attribute that to the blending of such a diverse group of ingredients, and each of these ingredients seems to bring out the very best in each component.

This may very well be the best cup of Yerba Maté I’ve tried!  It’s delish!
