Phoenix Dan Cong Duck Honey Snowflake/SerendipiTea Studios. . . .

Gongfu Brewing. . .something has always scared me away from trying to brew tea up in the tea ceremonial fashion and kept me to western brewing.  I think scared may be the incorrect word. I think intimidated is better.

I was intimidated by the amount of teaware you had to have, intimidated by having the right teaware, and also intimidated by making a complete fool out of myself for trying. But when March rolled around and I turned 40-I finally convinced myself it was time to finally immerse myself into learning something new.

And learn something I did.  I found myself taking notes after notes from different videos on YouTube from amazing tea bloggers like Tea for Me Please and tea companies like Mei Leaf.  By the time it was all said and done, I found tea ware that I already had that would work to get the party started.

So to test this out, I took a sample of Phoenix Dan Cong Duck Honey Snowflake from Serendipitea Studios and brewed the tea both in the gongfu method and western style.  The different was night and day.

With the gongfu method, I was able to get these rich gorgeous notes of sweet floral that I was not getting with the western style.  These pops of sweet floral thrilled my tastebuds and I found myself eagerly drinking this tea down.  Towards the middle brewing sessions, I would find myself describing the tea as being delicate but with a bit of power behind it.  Yes this tea is delicate but this tea demands your full attention as well. There was also this slight savory touch that I could note here and there but couldn’t really pull what I would compare the taste to.

With the western style, I was still able to pull out those beautiful floral notes with a sweet touch but I will say that the flavors were not as bold and not as alluring. Still delicious but I would say I prefer the gongfu method for this particular tea. The flavors were just more pronounced and more on point.

Regardless of how you brew this tea, this tea is fabulous and one that I will be getting more of for myself soon.  I’m beyond thrilled with the tea itself and have found myself wanting more so I may be ordering quicker than I intended to.  Smooth, lush, floral, with just a hit of a contrasting flavor here and there. Can’t ask for more from your tea.

Description

Elegant just like its name, Duck Honey Snowflake is a seasonal winter hand-picked harvest of regular Duck Honey Aroma all-natural tea. This winter version is much more florally delicate than the regular and contrasted to caramel like sweetness, its sweetness brings a rather icy wintry feel.

From the coastal area in Canton province, Phoenix Mountain possesses mineral-rich soil and is constantly surrounded by mists and fog, covered by wild tea tress and tea farms, as well as the folklore of the Phoenix Dan Cong Tea. Many wild tea trees are at least 100 to 200 years old.

It’s a special type of organic Oolong treasured for its highly distinctive natural aroma, and is also believed to be the ancestor of all Oolong teas. Well-known for its ten aromatic categories, it delivers rich and complex flavor. Local tea scholars and connoisseurs from China study and try to organize these all-natural teas into hundreds aromatic subgroups. Mandarin uses the word ‘Xiang’ or aroma for each specific type that mimics certain flower or fruit aroma. Phoenix Dan Cong’s aroma is never artificially added or perfumed but exclusively cultivated, artisan crafted, and each aroma comes from the tea plant’s natural aromatic compound.

Raven’s Blend from Friday Afternoon . . . . . .

Hello dear readers! I have recently come across a quite delightful tea company that was sent to me as a secret Santa gift and I was amazed by the quality and of course with the tea selection. I had a whole lot of tea to chose from in the care package that was sent to me but after some consideration, I picked up Raven’s Blend.

For starters, this tea is very light given its black tea base and I believe that is thanks to the white tea wingman. There is also blue cornflower in this tea which adds a delightfully light floral taste. To those who are familiar with the taste profile of Lady Grey, it is like that but more delicate. I feel like I say this a lot because most teas are relaxing but I find that this one can be paired with just about any relaxing activity. But it also can spark creativity, giving your brain a needed boost. Which makes sense because its namesake is derived from the Ravenclaw house in the Harry Potter series. Which, funny enough is my actually my house.

Now on to the pricing of this beautiful blend. There are a total of four sizes to choose from; 1 oz which is priced at $10, a 2 oz which is priced at $14, 4 oz for $25, and 8 oz for $45. There aren’t any individual samples that you can order outright but I do know for certain that you can email the shop and ask for individual samples at $2 per sample. If you want to be more adventurous there is a mystery sample pack for $13 with four options (high caffeine, no caffeine, moderate caffeine, mixed caffeine) and an educational sampler pack for $35 that comes with steeping notes that has five options to choose from; black teas, green teas, oolong teas, pu-erh teas, and medicinal teas. Lastly, if you are in the Harry Potter fandom, there is a Wizarding Collection that you can purchase for $25 that features .5-.75 ounces for each of the teas from each of the four houses.

For the final thoughts on this tea, I believe it is well worth the money for the taste and the woman behind it is also great from my experience. From what I can tell she is very active with her consumers and is constantly adding new products to her online and physical store. There is also an option to make your own custom tea blend for $35 either by email or at the physical location. Also, as I was writing this review, I made a fresh cup of Raven’s Blend and I will possibly make another one! I fell in love with this tea company and you better be ready to see more reviews of this company in the near future!

See you for the next cuppa, Kara

Tsui Yu Taiwan Floral (Jade) Oolong Tea from Fong Mong. . . .

You can always count on Fong Mong for exceptional Oolongs. The aroma cup reveals some wonderful vanilla and orchid notes in the aroma as it is steeping. A strange very very slight bit of asparagus hit the back of my tongue as I was sipping. This is not a tea for those who prefer strong teas. The flavors of this one are incredibly light. There are definitely some floral notes but if you swish it around in your mouth a bit you will also discover unique vegetable and herb notes. Be it ever so slight.

Give in to Temptation with a Picture of Earl Grey from NovelTeas

If you’re easily distracted by cute packaging, be warned that blends from NovelTeas can come shipped in beautiful, book-shaped, metal tins.  At first glance, these tins can sit amongst your real books, undetected until someone realizes the titles are full of tea-related puns.  Today, I’m tasting Picture of Earl Grey, also called Wilde’s Rosy Tea Blend on the Novel Teas site.

This blend is like a garden in a cup with lush rose petals and jasmine-green tea.  All those flowers are a perfect match for the showy, vanity of this novel.  Like Dorian, your tea will have eternal beauty since the dried flowers last much longer than fresh ones.  Mind your steep times with this brew or else the roses might get a bit overpowering. Among the rose and jasmine there is just enough tart, earl grey to give the tea a backbone and remind you of the staunch and proper Victorian Era.

Any of NovelTeas blends would be a great addition to a book club, adding themed scents and tastes to the literary discussion.  Picture of Earl Grey is a great blend for a garden party, or when you want your kitchen to be as fragrant as a spring garden in bloom.  Just a sip of this lush and verdant blend across your tongue and you’ll feel as poetic and witty as Oscar Wilde himself.

Here’s the scoop!

Leaf Type: Blend of Black and Green
Where to Buy: NovelTeas
Description:

The delicate flavorings and novel-inspired decorations of The Picture of Earl Grey™ may deceive you at first. This tin and tea provide for an exquisitely deceptive and Wildely elegant experience for any new collector. Organic jasmine green tea and a rose-blended bergamot radiate hedonism and reflect your eternal beauty as you sip.

Raining Weather Calls for a Rose Oolong from Indias Tea. . .

Today is one of those days where a rose oolong was just what the doctor ordered.  It has been raining non stop since Friday and we are starting to experience water in the basement and seeing flooding in our community.  So as the rain continues and the thunderstorms start up, a flavored oolong sounds like perfection.

This particular Rose Oolong is from Indias Tea.  The dry leaf of this blend is intoxicating.  Fresh floral notes fill the air while this tea starts to steep and creates a gorgeous blend that I couldn’t wait to check out.

Gorgeous sweet floral notes mingle marvelously with that familiar oolong flavor that I can always count on.  This tea aromas translate into this wonderful floral flavor.  As the tea settles and cools, those lovely rose notes develop more and more.   Such a warm, soothing, and comforting tea on such a spring rainy day.

Rose Oolong is one that I can see snuggling up to with a good book and letting the stresses of the day wash away.  Something I’ll be doing for sure soon!
