A Grown Up Chocolate Experience: Cacao Tea from Mi Cacao

Chocolate tea can be a decadent latte, or a great dessert-replacement.  But most of the chocolate teas I’ve tried, have black tea or honeybush tea as a base, mixed with chocolate chips and chocolate flavors.  This tea, Cacao Tea from Mi Cacao, is a completely different chocolate experience.

You may have heard about cascara tea at your local coffee shop, which is a brew made from the husks of the coffee cherries.  Similar to cascara tea, cacao tea is an herbal brew made with cacao shells.  These shells are the exterior pod that hold the cacao nibs, the essential chocolate-making ingredient.  But these shells still have plenty of flavor.

I brewed this once straight, and once with milk.  On its own, this tea does taste like chocolate, but it is almost salty and brothy, like a nutty chocolate popcorn tea blend.  The blend is enhanced by milk, making the blend feel creamier and sweeter, and more like the decadent chocolate teas with which I’m more familiar.

Do you remember liking the taste of coffee ice cream, but having a strong aversion to coffee itself?  But then you tried coffee on its own out of necessity or curiosity, and you came to like the strong brew on its own?  Cacao Tea feels like the chocolate equivalent.  It’s easy to like sugary, chocolatey hot chocolate, but cocoa tea might be more of an acquired taste.  But perhaps as your tastes or moods change, you’ll be looking for a chocolate brew that’s a little less sweet and more potent.  That’s when Cacao Tea will be the perfect choice.

Taster’s Review:

I love the inspiration behind this blend from Bluebird Tea Co. The dry leaf looks like something right out of Narnia, with its whole pink rosebuds, additional rose petals, plentiful cocoa shells, lemongrass pieces and the fluffy, mossy greenness of the raspberry leaves. It’s so pretty, the White Witch of Narnia might well use it to tempt Edmund away.  I used a generous heaped teaspoon of leaf for my cup, and gave it 4 minutes in boiling water. No additions. The resulting liquor is a medium golden brown, and the scent is faintly herbal, maybe a touch floral.

To taste, this one is pure liquid turkish delight, although the variety that comes coated in chocolate rather than dusted with icing sugar. The rose is the most prominent flavour; sweet with a hint of perfume. The flavour of milk chocolate emerges in the midsip, adding a creamy, almost vanilla-like sweetness that really complements the rose. Although cocoa shells are responsible for the flavour, there’s none of the dry bittersweetness cocoa can sometimes add to a tea. This is liquid milk chocolate over rose-flavoured turkish delight; sweet, smooth, and perfectly befitting a fairy tale.

I had hoped that the lemongrass would add perhaps a hint of lemon-flavoured Turkish delight, but it really doesn’t. While it contributes to the overall sweetness of this blend, its mild citrus flavour is completely overpowered by the rose. Still, that’s a minor complaint. With a tea this delicious, it hardly registers.

I’m always impressed by Bluebird’s blends. It’s clear that they take a lot of time putting each one together, and the ingredients are obviously wonderfully fresh. The rose buds in this blend, for example, are a bright pink, firm to the touch, and still tightly nipped together. There are no brown, soft, wilting rosebuds here! The abundance of whole ingredients adds to the aesthetic impact of the dry mix – these are truly beautiful teas that are a delight to look at as well as drink. The inspiration behind this tea is strong and clearly realised – it would be easy to identify this as a turkish delight tea, even had it not been labelled.

If you’re interested in a quality herbal tea, a delicious dessert tea, or are just a fan of the Narnia books and films, this blend could be just the thing for you. It comes highly recommended.

Taster’s Review:

This is part three of a five part review of the DAVIDsTEA Summer Collection.

Ah DAVIDsTEA, your love of coconut is so predictable. I’m pretty sure no one was surprised by the inclusion of an obviously coconut focused blend this season. What did surprise me, however, was the classification of this tea. It’s got honeybush listed as the first ingredient which to me says that it’s the ingredient in the largest quantity and yet this is still listed as a herbal/tisane and not classed as a rooibos/honeybush blend? That confuses me a lot. I’d really like a break down of the thought process that took place here.

Also surprisingly, I had the perfect excuse to do a cold brew for this one and instead I found myself brewing it up as a hot tea! It was alright; the most dominant flavor was the honeybush which again begs the question ‘why did you class this as a herbal!?” but it was pretty equally matched by the strong flavour of both fresh coconut and toasted coconut. I actually did expect a little more coconut flavor because DT had the biggest excuse to go all out here, but I’m happy with the level that’s present. Yummy! It definitely reminds me of coconut ice, minus the ice part. But the crisp, fresh flavor is really well conveyed.

Also, COCOA SHELLS! I’m really happy that DT hopped on board with the love of cocoa shells here because they do such a better job at conveying a smooth chocolate flavour than chocolate chips would have done; plus no oily chocolate goop! Their use here was definitely a smart decision, though I did find the flavour mild in comparison to everything else going on and I don’t know if the blend would have been lacking had chocolate not been included at all. I think they contribute more to the aroma than the taste itself.

I liked this one; probably would have liked it better cold but I wanted to switch things up a bit and be less predictable with my preparation. I’m sure I’ll happily finish off the rest of my trial sample though I do doubt I’ll pick more up afterwards because while this was tasty I just don’t think it was different enough to warrant a need for me. Coconut lover will be all over this one, though. I’m sure it’s gonna do really well.

Tasters Review:

I have been procrastinating on reviewing this NOT because I didn’t enjoy it because I REALLY do enjoy it and NOT because I didn’t know what to say because – as you scroll down and read –  you will see I have a LOT to say about this tea!  And what I have to say is ALL GOOD!  Another reason I waited to do a full length review about this tea is because each time I drank a cup of it I found something new and/or different I liked about it!

Here were my very first impressions of this tea…

This tea is just TOO special! The  SororiTEA Sisters were lucky enough to have Blends For Friends create a custom blend just for us and it’s really awesome!  These ingredients are great and the aroma and taste has some interesting surprises along the way! WOW! This is just FUN!!!

I’ve had over a dozen go-arounds with this tea and each time was a new and fun experience!  For example…one attempt was more of an Earl Grey and citrus type taste whereas the next was a combo of Dark Chocolate and Earl Grey Flavors.  Next cup I found a nice chocolate tea with a few floral notes.  Other cups were mostly chocolate and very yummy and just when I thought I knew what to expect in the next cup – the flavor would change just a tad to release yet another surprise in flavor!  There were times where I could taste the rose petals more than the other flavors or visa versa but each time I really enjoyed my cup and found it was a great tea to start the day with!

This tea goes beyond the aroma and taste tho!  These blends are custom made based on answers you give this wonderful company!  They have a way with words, too, just take a look at the product description above!

And their presentation is gorgeous!  The generous amount of loose leaf was stored in a heavy-duty yet classy tin gently placed inside a sophisticated plain black box and then wrapped in a silky and stylish ribbon.

And you can tell from their friendly and fast email responses that their customer service is top notch, too!

I like everything about this company and this tea they made for us!  It’s so neat to an official SororiTEA Sisters Blend of Tea!  Thanks so much – Blends For Friends!  You are a Gem in the tea world!
