Even though the weather here is warmer than usual. I find myself craving warming and comforting teas. I think that Sweet Autumn from Lupicia fits my cravings perfectly. It’s a very unique tea in that it’s composed of a rooibos base, sweet potatoes, chestnuts and squash. To me, this is like a fall harvest in a cup & it’s rare to find other blends that all, if not one, of these ingredients.
The scent of this tea is mostly of the sweet rooibos base, with a hint of something smoky, roasted and almost burnt. I also pick up notes of cinnamon, brown sugar and sweet potato.
Sipping… mmm, I like this one. It’s richly dark and sweet. The starchy potato and squash come out at the end of the sip. They blend so well with the brown sugar and molasses that it brings to mind sweet potato desserts and pies. I also detect a little bit of the chestnut.. it appears as a lingering roasted and burnt flavor. It would be even more terrific if this tea had a bit more body. The flavors are terrific, but a creamier mouthfeel could take this tea over the top. Even though there aren’t actually any spices in the tea, I also taste something like cinnamon in the background. I love that the cinnamon note is tame and not spicy. It pops out a bit like spices in a pumpkin pie or bread — supporting the squash flavor while adding that festive touch. This cup just screams autumn to me and I really love it. Yum!
