Ceylon is the ancestral name of the island nation of Sri Lanka, located off the southeastern coast of India. The name of the country was changed in 1972 but the teas are still known as Ceylon’s.
The Mahagastotte Estate is in the Nuwara Eliya district in the shadow of Pidurutalagala, Sri Lanka’s highest mountain. Mahagastotte in the native language means “place with large trees”. Teas from this estate are sometimes known as Lover’s Leap, a reference to the story of the King’s daughter who jumped off the mountain precipice with her forbidden lover.
Our selection is a medium body black tea with a fragrant bouquet and aromatic flavor, making it the perfect first cup of the day or a quick afternoon pick me up.
Taster’s Review:
Before I had read very much about this tea, I tasted it. And I must admit that I was shocked to learn that this is a Ceylon! I thought … maybe an Assam – although it didn’t taste quite like an Assam. Maybe a Nilgiri – but that wasn’t quite right either. It didn’t occur to me that this could possibly be a Ceylon.
This cup that sits before me is full of flavor, rich, smooth, and even a hint of malty flavor. This Ceylon is much more toothsome than I have ever tasted in a Ceylon.
It is a beautiful Ceylon – robust and brisk enough to serve as a breakfast blend – without the harshness that sometimes comes with a typical breakfast blend.
As I mentioned, there is a smoothness to this tea, and I want to describe this as a golden quality – it is almost honey-esque in flavor with pleasant notes of fruit and flower. Pleasantly complex, this tea shimmers on the palate when I take a sip (and hence, the “golden” quality).
This is a tea that is fantastic served hot in the morning, but makes a very nice iced tea too. It takes additions well too, a thin slice of lemon or lime is quite nice, especially when drinking it chilled. Hot, it is quite delicious with a splash of milk and a dollop of honey, but I am enjoying my cup without any addition and it’s quite good that way too!
This is about as perfect as a Ceylon tea can get! I highly recommend it!
